Writer, researcher Phil Chalmers hosts Carson City seminar addressing teen violence
Several agencies tasked with helping the youth in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Washoe counties gathered on Tuesday, April 9 to address a growing and controversial topic: Why teens kill.
Carson City Juvenile Services, with the help of Partnership Carson City, hosted a training seminar facilitated by Phil Chalmers, a true crime writer and TV personality whom has dedicated his life researching homicides, serial killers, mass murders and school shooters.
With such a vast knowledge of the subject, Chalmers addressed several topics to include triggers and warning signs he was able to gather personally from the hundreds of interviews he has conducted in his 35 year career.
Chalmers also addressed dangerous youth culture, including cop-killing music, violent video games, and dangerous social media and phone apps, which research is proving has a life-altering impact on today’s youth.
Over 150 participants attended the seminar with one goal in mind, identify those at risk and attempt to get ahead before another tragedy occurs.
“You can’t stop what you don’t know,” Chalmers stated. "Every day 5 teenagers kill somebody. Five a day, everyday.”
Chalmers believes educating those directly involved with the youth and identifying these warning signs may save an innocent life from being taken.
