Carson City Health and Human Services adapts as more COVID vaccines become available Monday

After Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced that on April 5 any Nevadan aged 16 and older would be allowed to get the vaccine, Carson City Health and Human Services began preparing for the new changes so that anyone within the Quad-County region who wanted their COVID-19 vaccines could receive it.
“CCHHS will continue to host multiple vaccination events in each of our counties every week,” said CCHHS public information officer Jessica Rapp. “Events will continue to be large in accordance with the vaccine allocation that is received from the State. The frequency of vaccination events will remain the same with an occasional weekend event occurring if vaccine allocations allow us to offer these events.”
Additionally, drive-thru vaccination events may occur in the future if appropriate locations can be secured, and the weather would allow for such events without compromising the vaccine, according to Rapp.
However, appointments for the vaccine will still be made on a week-by-week basis based on the quantity of vaccine CCHHS receives from the state.
“We receive our final allocation count a week prior to receiving the vaccine and then we work to schedule events and the number of appointments based on our allocations,” said Rapp. “As long as this is occurring, appointments will continue to be opened week-by-week.”
Despite the governor’s orders to allow anyone access to the vaccine who would like it, that does not necessarily mean there will be an increase in vaccine allocations to the Quad-Counties. Vaccine allocations change on a weekly basis, and are distributed by the federal government to the state, and then the state to the different regions.
The average number of first-doses CCHHS receives per week is 1,800. On average, they receive around 2,800 combined doses each week. The second dose allocation is based on what CCHHS received four weeks prior for Modern or three weeks prior for Pfizer.
Starting April 5, all Quad-County COVID-19 vaccine events will be open to Nevada residents and employees. Appointments for events on and after April 5 are now open.
“The public is able to receive their vaccine from several local pharmacies, through one of the events hosted by Carson City Health and Human Services, or their health care provider if they are vaccinating,” said Rapp. “We want to encourage everyone to schedule their vaccine appointment through one of these outlets! Please only make one appointment at one of these outlets.”
