Young Women pursuing STEM Fields to be honored by Society of Women Engineers in Reno banquet
This April, the Society of Women Engineers, Sierra Nevada Section, will host their seventh annual banquet to support Northern Nevada and Northern California area youth exploring science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
High school teachers from around the region are invited to nominate female students in their classes to receive this award of merit. Those students who are nominated are then invited to attend the banquet –along with their friends, families, supporters and teachers – to receive a certificate and accolades on stage and with fanfare.
This year’s banquet is April 10, 2019 at The Grove in Reno.
“We set out to create an event that reinforces for young people what we know now: that girls can do anything they set out to do,” says event committee leader and section president Judy Kareck, P.E., a civil engineer. “Teachers work so hard to break down barriers for women in STEM fields early.”
“Our members volunteer regularly at schools across Northern Nevada and Northern California,” says the group’s president emeritus, mechanical engineer and former G.E. executive Seena Drapala. “We wanted to give these hard-working teachers special credentials to bestow on their students, too. This is something students can use to bolster their resumes and college applications - a recognition from their teacher and a professional organization in their community.”
“Over the last seven years, I’d say my favorite thing is reading the quotes from teachers,” says committee member Lisa Frisch. “No one expresses surprise that ‘a girl did this.’ It’s just one fantastic report after another about hard work, natural talent and leadership qualities.”

At the banquet, the high school students receiving honors are treated to a keynote speaker from the STEM field who will share the challenges and successes of her own journey into the sciences. They also witness pending graduates from the University of Nevada, Reno, who have been members of the UNR chapter of the Society of Women Engineers, as they are congratulated for achieving their degrees. And finally, we honor several of our peers, male and female, who are actively helping our region’s young women become STEM stars.
We made it very easy for teachers to nominate students, but time is running out to be part of this amazing event. Are you a high school teacher or faculty member who has an outstanding STEM student to recognize? Please reach out soon http://sns.swe.org/stemstars2019.html.
