Carson City weather: Gusty winds ahead of Thursday storm system
A storm system pushing into the region on Thursday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory for Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and much of western Nevada and the Sierra.
The storm will push a strong cold front through the area Thursday morning bringing wet weather along with strong, gusty winds.
The amount of precipitation will be on the low side for the region since the system is tracking more east of Reno.
The area can see around 0.25 inches of widespread rain, according to the weather service. The big issue with this storm is the strong winds that it will generate. This storm will produce strong sustained winds with widespread gusts for valleys of 40 to 50 mph. The Wind Advisory runs from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
The strongest sustained winds will be in Mono and Mineral counties where sustained winds could reach up to 30-40 mph.
Strong crosswinds may produce travel restrictions for high profile vehicles. Choppy conditions can be expected
on Washoe Lake. Areas of turbulence and wind shear will be possible for those with aviation interests.
Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage.
Travel restrictions are possible for high profile vehicles along with an increased risk for turbulence and wind shear for aviation. Hazardous boating conditions can be expected across all area lakes.
The system will then move out by Friday setting up a pleasant day for Saturday.
