A fire has been reported at Cafe at Adele's on North Carson Street. The fire was reported at 5:19 a.m. by a security guard working for another company who passed by the restaurant and saw smoke. Firefighters are on the scene.
The fire was in the rear of the building, and chef/owner Charlie Abowd said it appears to have started in the laundry storage area. The building was built in 1864, and the restaurant has been in the Abowd family for 41 years.
Asked about the damages, Abowd said, "I don't know at this point. We will do the mitigation and we will do the cleanup. It may take some time but we will eventually open, hopefully soon."
It is the only known fire in the building's history, Abowd said.
Charlie's wife, Karen Abowd, said they are in the process of trying to find enough freezer and refrigeration storage for the food they have stored since the building is without electricity. They are awaiting word from the health department to determine what they will be able to keep.
Karen Abowd said she is thankful for the swift efforts of the fire department's response. She said Charlie usually arrives at the restaurant at around 6 a.m. She was told by firefighters that when they opened the back door to the restaurant there was a flashover of flame and smoke. Charlie, she said, wouldn't have been prepared had he opened the door.
Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon said there was significant damage to the storage area and light to moderate smoke damage throughout the building. There was no apparent exterior damage to the front of the building. The only exterior damage is in the back of the building where firefighters made entrance, he said.
There were approximately 25 firefighters who were assigned to the incident, which included four engines, and a ladder truck from East Fork Fire District. The blaze was knocked down around 20 minutes after fire trucks arrive, said Slamon.
