Carson City, Storey County and Reno area see February job gains
Job growth remained strong throughout the Silver State in February with increases in employment in Carson City, Storey County, Reno area and Las Vegas, according to figures released Tuesday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Carson City added 300 jobs over the month and 1,600 over the year, a 5.4 percent increase. The capital city's unemployment for the month was 5.9 percent, down 0.1 point from a year ago.
Reno added 700 jobs over the month and 10,200 over the year, a 4.5 percent increase. Reno area unemployment was 4.2 percent, down 0.4 point from a year ago.
In Storey County, manufacturing and construction added 3,800 and 700 jobs, respectively, during the third quarter.
Las Vegas gained 2,600 jobs over the month and 26,300 over the year, a 2.7 percent increase. Unemployment for the Las Vegas metro area was 5.2 percent in February, up 0.1 point from a year ago.
According to the DETR February 2018 economic report, this data shows that growth was distributed throughout the state. While this growth was fastest in the northern metropolitan areas, Las Vegas still added over 26,000 jobs over the year with growth in both goods-producing and service industries.
Unemployment continues to widely decline, with the unemployment rate down in 13 of 17 counties and initial claims for unemployment benefits down in 12 of 17 counties over the year, said David Schmidt, Chief Economist, for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation.
Additional February 2018 Economic Report Highlights:
— Carson City wages totaled $930 per week through the third quarter. Washoe County, at $933, came in just above the statewide average. Clark County was slightly below State average at $898 per week. Wages in Nevada averaged $914 per week during the third quarter of 2017. Weekly wages range from $753 (Lincoln) to $1,762 (Eureka).
— Elko, Eureka, Humboldt and Lander counties all had an unemployment rate of 4.0 percent or less, the lowest such rates in the state. February unemployment rates ranged from 3.6 percent (Eureka) to 6.4 percent (Lyon).
— Unemployment rates declined on an over-the-year basis in 13 of 17 counties this month.
— Year-over-year declines in initial claims activity in all but five counties (Esmeralda, Lincoln, Pershing, Eureka, and Esmeralda) this month.
— In Las Vegas, goods-producing industries added 6,700 jobs to payrolls while service-providing industries added 19,100.
