Max Casino: Black Bear opening targeted for May
Construction of the Black Bear Diner at Max Casino on South Carson Street is in full swing, and is estimated for completion by early May, Max Casino General Manager Lee Kennedy said Tuesday.
“We’re going to push hard to get to that date,” he said. “The community has really become attached to this project. Everybody’s talking about it.”
The Black Bear Diner at the Max Casino — the Redding, California-based restaurant chain’s first in Carson City — replaces the old Max Café, which closed in February to make way for the new restaurant.
“We wanted to bring something unique and special to Carson City,” Kennedy said. “The Black Bear Diner is a perfect fit for that.”
More space is also being devoted to the new restaurant, Kennedy said, by expanding its seating capacity to 183. The Max Café’s seating capacity was at around 146, he said.
Kennedy said the ownership terms of the diner are complicated, but essentially Max Casino now has an investment in the franchise.
“It’s going to be our Black Bear,” he said.
The addition of the Black Bear Diner is part of Max Casino’s plan for overall expansion, Kennedy said.
The company plans to hire an additional 100 people next month to work in the casino, the Wyndham Gardens Hotel, and the Black Bear Diner, he said.
“We want to grow in this community,” Kennedy said, “and Black Bear is a piece of that.”
Max Casino is holding a job fair next month, he said, from which the company plans to hire its additional staff.
New staff will undergo a two-week training period after hire, Kennedy said, and then be placed out on the floor.
The Black Bear’s cuisine is best described as family fare, he said, which is home-style comfort food.
Its online menu features such popular items as burgers and melts, chicken-fried steak, pot roast, fried chicken, meatloaf, ribs and steaks, eggs benedict and pancakes, among others.
Max Casino’s Black Bear Diner will be the restaurant’s sixth franchise in Nevada with others located in Reno, Sparks, Fernley, Henderson, and Las Vegas.
The Black Bear Diner was founded in Northern California in 1995, and now operates 77 diners in eight U.S. states.
