Nevada JAG students get political, visit lawmakers in Carson City
Students from across the state came to Carson City on Wednesday from the Jobs for America’s Graduates program to meet with government officials, take tours of their state Capitol building, and sit in on Assembly and Senate meetings.
One student from each school across the Silver State joined in, from the northern, southern, and rural Nevada JAG programs.
For some students, this was not only their first time in Northern Nevada, but their first time seeing their state government in action.
“They’ve been enjoying themselves,” said McQueen High School JAG instructor Laycie Corley. “One student from Pioneer High School was able to meet with her legislator that she wrote a letter to earlier in the year.”
The students were able to sit on Assembly and Senate meetings, meet with their legislators and were to meet with Governor Steve Sisolak later in the day, as well as take a tour of the Supreme Court and the Capitol building.
“They will also have an opportunity to talk about the JAG program and how it’s beneficial in their lives with their legislators on a more personal level,” said Corley.
