Caretaker named as a suspect in death of Carson City toddler; pipe bomb found inside home
A suspect has been identified and a pipe bomb was discovered inside a north Carson City home where an investigation is underway after a toddler died Friday, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said late Saturday.
Eric Buhl, 26, was listed as a suspect in the death of 2-1/2 year-old Coahuyana Hernandez. Buhl was the caretaker looking after the girl. His bail has been set at $250,000.
On Friday, Carson City sheriff’s deputies and paramedics were called to the 100 block of Manzanita Terrace in north Carson City for a report of an unresponsive toddler who had fallen. At arrival, the girl was being administered CPR by Buhl.
Paramedic crews treated the young girl and rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff’s detectives completed searches of a residence at Yukon Court and released it back to the residents early Saturday afternoon. An autopsy was performed on Saturday. The findings of the medical examiner are pending.
During the search of the Manzanita Terrace home on Friday night, detectives discovered a pipe bomb in the bedroom of Buhl. When Buhl was confronted with the discovery, he confirmed that the bomb was live, Furlong said.
At 8:46 p.m., Friday the Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad was dispatched to render the area safe; the pipe bomb was disabled at 12:50 a.m. Saturday morning. Buhl was taken into custody and charged with felony possession of an explosive device and gross misdemeanor child endangerment.
Late Saturday night, Eric Buhl was named as a “suspect” in the death of Coahuyana Hernandez, said Furlong. His bail was increased to $250,000. The investigation into the death of the toddler is ongoing.
