Mammoth Lakes fire captain dies from injuries in Smith Valley crash

A Mammoth Lakes man and fire captain has been identified in a crash that happened Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 in Smith Valley, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Lawrence Myrold, 62, a fire captain with the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, died March 2, from injuries sustained in the two-vehicle crash, reported at approximately 8:15 a.m. on State Route 824 (Day Lane) and State Route 823 (Lower Colony Road).

Myrold's passing was confirmed by the Mammoth Lake Fire Department in a Facebook post.

The preliminary NHP investigation shows that a white 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 pickup, driven by Myrold, was traveling westbound on SR-824 approaching the intersection of SR-823. A green 1998 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling northbound on SR-823 approaching the intersection with SR-824.

The GMC Sierra pickup failed to yield the right of way from a stop sign and struck the right side of the Dodge Ram pickup, causing the Dodge Ram pickup to overturn, according to NHP.

This crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.) - NHP Case No. 210201750.

Today, my usual chipper column seems out of place. Senseless violence in our state, perpetrated at a country music festival in Las Vegas, is horrific. And you know what? It’s just fine to feel the horror of it. It’s just fine to be numb. It’s just fine to cry. It’s just fine to process national or world events exactly the way we need to. Giving each other time, space, and open hearts to express is good medicine. In fact, it’s the medicine we need.
