Signing for Reading Week at Empire Elementary School
Carson City fourth grader Lilyan Montes Wungnema, 11, of Empire Elementary School, read and signed while Alina Edwards, DHH (deaf and hard of hearing) interpreter, voiced Henry Cole’s book “Unspoken” to Ms. Alicia Trujillo’s fourth grade class and other students Thursday afternoon for Reading Week.
Lilyan has been signing since she was two years old and is one of two deaf students at the school.
Third grader Raimmier Iray, 10, also read and signed while Brittany Duncan, DHH interpreter, voiced Mo Willems’s books “Knuffle Bunny.”
“Reading Week is celebrated to encourage the love of reading,” Principal Susan Squires said. “We invite role models from the community to read to our students and discuss the importance of reading in our everyday lives.”
