Carson City area road report for week of Feb. 29 through March 6

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Feb. 29 through March 6, 2016: Advance Notice: Utility work will begin the week of Monday, March 7, on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. Lane closures will be in place at that time and more details will be forthcoming.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 29, through Friday, March 4, there will be lane closures with flagger-controlled traffic on College Parkway just east of Airport Road and at the intersection of College Parkway and Dale Drive, due to utility work.

Washington Street will be closed between Curry and Phillips Streets Monday through Wednesday, and between Carson and Stewart Streets Thursday and Friday, due to the construction of the East/West Water Transmission Project. Bus stops on Washington Street at Plaza Street, will be temporarily closed beginning Thursday and Friday.

There will be intermittent closures on Proctor, Telegraph, and Spear Streets between Carson and Nevada Streets, Monday through Friday, during daytime hours due to utility work. In addition, there will be intermittent closures on Curry Street between Musser and Robinson Streets during this time, with possible night work as well.

On Monday, Feb. 29, Center Drive will be closed between Topsy Lane and Clear Creek Avenue. For the remainder of the week, Center Drive will have one lane open with flagger-controlled traffic at the intersection with Topsy Lane.

Beginning Tuesday, March 1, through Wednesday, March 2, State Street will be closed to through traffic during the daytime hours. Access to business will remain open.

Lane closures are expected at the following locations due to utility work:
— Panamint Road near Furnace Creek Road.
— Presti Lane (Monday-Wednesday).
— Sandy Circle (shoulder work on Thursday only).

Race Track Road will be closed to through traffic between Bigelow Drive and Schulz Drive for the entire week.

There will be intermittent lane closures on King Street just west of Ormsby Boulevard. Minor delays are possible.

The Bellevue Road bridge over I-580 in Washoe Valley will continue to be closed due to maintenance. The overpass and ramps are expected to be closed for approximately three months. Detours will be signed.

There is a potential for significant changes in the weather by the weekend. Motorists should prepare for snow in the Sierra with the approaching storm system, according to the National Weather Service. Here's the Caltrans road report for the Sierra region from Feb. 28 to March 5, 2016:

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Sierra College Boulevard to Newcastle Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures and on-ramp closures from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday through Saturday for bridge work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday on the Brace, Gilardi, Horseshoe Bar, King, Penryn and Magra overcrossings for bridge work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Newcastle Road overcrossing: Motorists can expect intermittent full ramp closures to Interstate 80 from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday February 22 through Friday February 26 until 7 a.m. Saturday February 27 for bridge work.

State Route 89 (Placer/Nevada County) at the Union Pacific Railroad undercrossing south of Interstate 80: Nicknamed the “Mousehole” project, work continues to construct a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel under the Union Pacific Railroad adjacent to the existing SR 89 undercrossing and construct a Class I paved trail along the east side of SR 89 between Deerfield Drive and West River Street.

State Route 89 (Placer/Nevada County) from West River Street to Deerfield Drive: No traffic interfering work scheduled for this week.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from the junction with SR 174 to the WB off ramp to Bennett Street: Motorists can expect left turn lane on the off ramp and lane one of the surface street closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for utility work.

State Route 49 - Southbound (Placer County) from Kemper and New Airport Road to Cottage Drive: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for utility work.

State Route 49 (Placer County) from Bell Road and Lone Star Road: Motorists can expect alternating one way traffic controls from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday March 1 for electrical work.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Rams Horn Campground to Sidehill viaduct: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday March 2 through Friday March 4 for guardrail work.

State Route 49 (Yuba/Sierra County) from Marysville Road to Yuba Pass summit: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for miscellaneous work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Donner Park overcrossing to Vista Point and again from Donner Pass Inspection Facility (CHP scales) to the Fibreboard undercrossing: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closure from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday February 29 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday March 2 for guardrail repair.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) from central Truckee to Donner Park overcrossing: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday March 1 for striping operations.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) from the Long Ravine undercrossing to the I-80/Hwy 193 interchange: Motorists can expect alternating right lanes and right shoulder closures from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for maintenance operations.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) at the Douglas Boulevard overcrossing: Motorists can expect right lane closures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday March 2 for electrical work.

State Route 174 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Ophir Street to eastbound Hwy 20 frontage road and ramp: Motorists can expect right lane closures (one way traffic control) and right shoulder closures on the local cross streets from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for utility work.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Lane to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect lane closures (one way traffic control) and right shoulder restrictions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday February 29 to March 4 for tree work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from the Coloma School House to Mt. Murphy Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Greenstone Road to Shingle Springs Road: Westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday for sign work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at Rock Creek Road: Motorists can expect long-term signalized one-way traffic control for emergency repair work.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) will begin removing specialized mats, called bottom barriers, from Taylor and Tallac creeks and marshes in early October, the agencies said today. They have been working together since 2021 to remove a 17-acre infestation of aquatic invasive plants in the marsh in the Southwest portion of the Tahoe Basin.

CARSON CITY — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week released the 2023 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps. The maps show Nevada’s adult obesity prevalence for 2023 is 30.8 percent, a decrease from 2022 (33.5 percent) and 2021 (31.3 percent) but still higher than all reported rates from 2011-2020.

Students are now several weeks into the school year at Carson High School, with the newest rule firmly in place: a complete ban of phones both inside and outside the classroom during school hours.

The introduction of the Yondr pouch was a controversial one, with some students and parents protesting the idea. However, since its implementation, administration, teachers, and surprisingly the students who Carson Now spoke with have agreed the new policy has been extremely positive.
