Carson City arrests: Man jailed for arson after allegedly starting brush fire

A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday in the area of East Hampton Drive for suspicion of third degree arson after allegedly starting a brush fire with a lighter, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Mark Dylan Furlong was taken into custody at 6:27 p.m. after allegedly setting fire to bushes causing a small brush fire in the area of Hot Springs Road and Pine Lane. He is not a relation to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

According to the arrest report, two witnesses called 911 to report seeing a man deliberately set fire in a nearby field. Deputies arrived and detained the suspect, who smelled strongly of an alcoholic beverage.

Deputies also spoke with one witness who said he saw the man trying to start a fire with a lighter. He said he could see the flicker and confronted the man, asking him why he started the fire. The suspect told the witness “you ain’t seen nothing yet” and then asked him if he had any drugs or knew where he could get some, according to the arrest report.

The witness told the man that he didn’t have any drugs and then watched the suspect walk west toward Pine Lane.

The suspect was read his Miranda rights and agreed to speak, saying he had done nothing wrong. He then became belligerent and made statements about “blowing up social media” about the incident, the arrest report states.

After speaking with another witness and observing a 10 foot by 10 foot area had been burned with individual bushes set on fire, the man was arrested. He protested and said he didn’t know why he was being arrested. Once at jail three 200 ml empty bottles of Black Velvet whiskey were located in the man’s jacket. Three matchbooks and two lighters were found in his pockets. Deputies booked them into evidence. Bail: $5,000.

The man admitted to having smoked marijuana earlier. The man was asked how much he had to smoke. He told the officer he didn’t think he needed to answer the question because marijuana was legal. The officer informed the man that it is illegal to be under the influence of the drug while driving. He was asked if he would submit to field sobriety tests. The man said no and asked what would happen if he declined. The man was informed he could lose his license. The man agreed to field sobriety tests. He showed signs of impairment during the field sobriety tests and was arrested on suspicion of DUI drugs, the arrest report states.

Once in custody and after initially saying he wasn’t going to consent to a blood draw, he agreed and then changed his mind and did not want to give a voluntary blood draw. A telephonic search warrant was granted by a judge and a blood draw was performed. The child was released to his mother. Bail: $3,709.
