On Tuesday, February 16, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Nevada Department of Transportation will be testing its new enhanced wind warning system along I-580 in Washoe Valley. During this time, there will be roadside flashing signs prohibiting vehicles over nine feet tall from driving in the valley, however, these vehicles will still be permitted to travel on I-580 during the test period, as will be indicated on the overhead freeway signs.
The Bellevue Road bridge over I-580 in Washoe Valley will continue to be closed due to maintenance. The overpass and ramps are expected to be closed for approximately three months. Detours will be signed.
NDOT is improving bridges crossing the Carson River and the Cradlebaugh Slough on U.S. 395 in the Carson Valley just south of Carson City. Periodic lane and shoulder closures will continue primarily during non-commute hours. One lane in each direction of U.S. 395 will always be available during construction. The project is scheduled to complete by early summer 2016.
Meanwhile, big changes are on the way this week weather wise. After more than a week's worth of mild and dry conditions around Carson City and Lake Tahoe, a winter storm system will return Wednesday with snow in the Sierra and rain with the potential for snow showers in the valleys, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will become strong and gusty Wednesday, which is likely to impact travel for high profile vehicles, followed by rain and then snow Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Exact snow amounts are uncertain at this time due to the rapid progression of the storm and very warm air ahead of it, but liquid totals in the Sierra look to be 1 to 2 inches or around a foot or more, according to the weather service.
Snow levels will fall behind the cold front Wednesday night with rapidly deteriorating conditions in the Sierra likely. Motorists can expect delays along Highway 50 over Spooner, Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade and over Donner Summit.
The weather service advises to have a back up travel plan. Snow is possible in Western Nevada by Thursday morning, but accumulation below 5,000 feet is unlikely.
