Carson City area weather: Storms to bring valley rain, Sierra snow to region through holiday weekend

A series of storms will move through the Sierra and western Nevada beginning Thursday and extend into the President's Day holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The first storm, Thursday into Friday, is expected to bring gusty west, southwest winds, Sierra snow and rain in the western Nevada valleys.

For the Carson City area, there's a 30 percent chance of rain after 4 p.m. Thursday and 70 chance of rain overnight into Friday morning. Forecasters say precipitation amounts could range from a quarter to half an inch possible.

The second weather system on Saturday will bring another round of gusty winds and wintry precipitation with better chances for snow at all elevations, forecasters say. For the Carson City area, rain is likely and may possibly be mixed with snow, mainly after 10 a.m.

Per a special weather statement issued Wednesday, the third storm arrives early Monday morning, bringing gusty winds, chances for valley rain and Sierra snow, impacting travel on Monday.

Forecaster confidence is high for travel disruptions on the Sierra passes will all of these systems and some concerns for western Nevada roadways too.

For the first storm, the weather service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. for greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County.

Forecasters say total snow accumulations of 0 to 4 inches at Lake Tahoe level and west of Highway 395 in Mono County. Above 7,000 feet north of Highway 50, 6 to 12 inches is possible, and 6 to 18 inches above 7,000 feet south of Highway 50. Sierra ridge winds up to 100 mph with lower elevation winds gusting between 25 to 35 mph.

RENO — A total of 12 Nevada Guard Soldiers and Airmen departed Nevada on Friday morning aboard a Nevada Air Guard C-130 cargo plane and are en route to Puerto Rico to assist with the disaster relief after Hurricane Maria struck the territory last week.

Parents of seniors are invited to Carson High School on Monday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. in the CHS library for Senior Parent Night. A similar night for parents of CHS juniors follows on Wednesday.
