Man jailed for suspected felony DUI after eluding Carson City sheriff's deputy in vehicle pursuit

A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Thursday morning for suspicion of felony driving under the influence and eluding with endangerment among other charges, a sheriff's deputy said.

Robert Edward Slater Jr. was arrested at 12:13 a.m. near the intersection of Stanton and Monte Rosa Drive. He also faces charges of misdemeanor basic speeding 11-15 mph over, lamps required and disobedience to traffic control device. Records show he had a felony DUI conviction in 2010.

According to the arrest report, the man was observed by a Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputy turning southbound on Monte Rosa Drive from Stanton Drive at a high rate of speed and without using headlights or taillights.

The deputy activated the emergency lights and siren and caught up to the vehicle near Monte Rosa and Gordonia Drive. The vehicle did not yield to the patrol car and turned onto Gordonia traveling at approximately 40 mph in the 25 mph residential zone, the arrest report states.

Slater then failed to pull over and continued to run the stop sign at Gordonia and Siskiyou Drive and sped onto Siskiyou Drive. The CCSO deputy continued pursuit when Slater’s vehicle conducted a U-turn and facing head-on with the deputy, it went around the patrol car and finally came to a stop on Siskiyou Drive.

The CCSO deputy quickly maneuvered his patrol car behind the suspect's vehicle and then held Slater at gunpoint while ordering him to stay in the vehicle with his hands up. Slater failed to follow the directions and exited the vehicle, but complied when ordered to get on the ground, the report states.

The deputy waited for backup and then placed Slater into handcuffs. Slater stated he had “one beer,” and then quickly changed his answer to “two beers.” He was unable to maintain his balance without leaning against the patrol car, the report states.

The deputy asked him why he didn’t stop for the emergency vehicle and he stated, “I did stop, in front of my house.”

Slater originally agreed to field sobriety tests, but the deputy felt it would be safer to administer the tests within the security of the jail. Upon arrival, the man refused to participate and also refused a preliminary breath test. The deputy advised that refusing the evidentiary testing would result in his driver’s license being revoked for a minimum of one year. Slater responded, saying “let’s do one year,” the arrest report states. Total bail: $40,246.
