The Nevada Day parade, with all of its corresponding events, is my favorite thing that Carson City has to offer. Normally, I would just have the complete listing of everything Saturday has to offer in my weekend event summary, but Parade Day offers a few challenges. Namely, there is just so much going on in downtown Carson City that creating a separate listing seems easiest for all of my readers. Whether it’s the bloody marys, the beard contest, or running into long-lost friends that gets you there, it's going to be a beautiful, sunny day.

Historic downtown Carson City bustled with crowds and activities Friday afternoon in celebration of "Passport To Downtown" on the eve of the Nevada Day Parade.

As the capital city prepares for Saturday's 79th annual Nevada Day Parade, the thousands who line Carson Street for the celebration will no doubt generate paper, plastic, food and beverage waste.

Carson City crews spent Friday putting out barrels along the parade route as an all-out effort to minimize what others leave behind. Following the parade, Carson City Public Works is there to sweep the street clean of debris.

As Halloween nears, it appears local pranksters are out and about as the trees change for the season.

Nevada’s namesake guide dog puppy-in-training is almost ready to return to Guide Dogs for the Blind for his formal training as a working guide. At last year’s Nevada Day Classic, a lucky puppy raiser was presented with Nevada, then only 8 weeks old.

CARSON CITY — The Reno Corvette Club answered the call to fill a pickup with pet food at Michael Hohl Motor Company for the national nonprofit Pets of the Homeless.

A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday in the area of 10th and Curry Street for two felony parole violation warrants, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

He was Virginia City’s first goodwill ambassador and he died 41 years ago this week. Born Arnold Fryk in Wisconsin in 1912, Fryk headed west at an early age and found work in Hollywood as a stunt man and horse wrangler. He later worked at Death Valley, Calif., where dressed as a prospector, people would often pay to have their picture taken with him.

It was here at Bad Water Basin in Death Valley that Fryk became Bad Water Bill, a moniker that stayed with him for the rest of his life.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will conduct an alcohol compliance check this Friday, Oct. 27. Teens not of legal age to buy alcohol will be sent into local businesses in Carson City who have liquor licenses. The teens will attempt to purchase alcohol using their real identification.

Oh, wow, I just got a glance at the date. With the gorgeous weather planned for today, it’s hard to believe that Christmas is two months away. Let’s celebrate the holidays right in front of us first.
