NHP: Wellington man dies in I-580 crash, 1 critically injured and 1 jailed for suspected DUI
The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a Wellington, Nev. man who died in a three-vehicle crash that happened early Sunday morning on I-580 south of Moana Lane in Reno.
NHP confirmed that Korbin Preston, 20, died in the crash that happened at around 4:40 a.m. in the southbound lane of the freeway. A female passenger with Preston remains in critical condition as of Tuesday morning and 1 person has been arrested for suspicion of DUI after attempting to flee the scene.
A preliminary investigation shows that a red Nissan Titan pickup was traveling southbound on I-580 south of Moana Lane. The driver of the red Nissan Titan pickup struck the rear of a red Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, driven by Preston, near the left-hand travel lane, said NHP Trooper Matt McLaughlin.
The Jeep came to rest on its wheels in the left-hand travel lane facing northeast. The Nissan Titan came to rest on its wheels in the left-hand travel lanes facing east. Shortly thereafter, a secondary collision occurred when a white Toyota Tacoma pickup struck the left rear of the red Jeep Grand Cherokee and the left side of the red Nissan Titan.
The female occupant of the Jeep was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. She remains in critical condition at this time, according to NHP.
After the initial crash, the driver of the red Nissan Titan fled the scene on foot. The driver was located a short time later by the Reno Police Department near the Moana Lane off-ramp. The driver was arrested by NHP troopers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and several additional charges associated with the crash.
The Nevada Highway Patrol is seeking additional witnesses to this crash, particularly any witnesses that observed any or all of the vehicles prior to impact.
