Carson City arrests: Man jailed for allegedly threatening adults, toddler with pick axe

A 48-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday for two counts assault with a deadly weapon and other charges after allegedly threatening adults and a toddler with a pick axe, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Steven Kleine was taken into custody at 11:49 a.m. in the 1800 block of Spooner Drive. He also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of disregard for safety and misdemeanor domestic battery.

According to the sheriff’s report, deputies were called to the residence for a report of domestic violence with a deadly weapon involved. On scene officers made contact with four victims, including a 2-year-old female. The three adult victims stated they all lived together in the residence and that Kleine had been belligerent, appeared intoxicated by alcohol and was threatening their safety as he actively brandished a large knife and threaten to kill one of the adult victims, the arrest report states.

Two adult victims with the 2-year-old locked themselves in a room fearing for their lives that the man would either kill them or place them at risk of substantial bodily harm, the arrest report states.

An adult victim outside the room observed the suspect put down the knife and leave briefly, then returning with a large pick axe, the arrest report states. It was learned the man attempted to force entry through the locked door and struck the door with the pick portion of the tool, placing an approximately 2-inch hole through both panels of the door, the arrest report states.

For this alleged action, the suspect was directly negligent as he actively displayed willful and wanton disregard for the safety of the juvenile inside the room, the arrest report states.

A deputy observed one of the victims to have a laceration to their right wrist. The deputy learned from the victim that the suspect held her down with his body weight and grabbed her wrists. The injury happened, she told the deputy, as she attempted to free herself from the man’s grasp of her wrists. The victim further stated the man repeatedly hit her on the back of her head with both a closed fist and open palm, the arrest report states.

Kleine was arrested for suspicion of two counts assault with a deadly weapon, one count of criminal negligence, and one count domestic battery. Bail amount listed: $45,637.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the 3900 block of South Carson Street regarding a store employee who was attacked by a suspect who was attempting to steal items.
