Carson City arrest log: Woman jailed after cashing money orders from missing purse

A Carson City woman was arrested Saturday after allegedly attempting to cash money orders found in a purse that had been reported missing, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. The woman’s husband faces a gross misdemeanor charge of being an accessory to the alleged crime.

Christina Leon, 29, faces a felony charge of being in possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit a crime and a misdemeanor charge of obtaining money under false pretenses. Her bail has been set at $28,632. Her husband faces a gross misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit a crime with a $2,500 bail amount.

According to the arrest report, officers were called to the Smith’s grocery store on William Street at 5:40 p.m. regarding a man and woman attempting to cash a money order that had been reported stolen.

Officers met with the store manager, suspect Christina Leon and her husband. The couple were crying and told officers they are married and going through hard times. Christina originally said she found the money orders in the bathroom of a fast food restaurant.

She said she held onto them even when a woman came in looking for a missing purse. Christina Leon later changed her story when she agreed to be Mirandized, saying she found the purse in the bathroom, removed the money orders from the purse that didn’t belong to her and then threw the purse away.

She said the victim later came in looking for the purse. Christina said she told the woman she knew nothing about it. The next day she went to a store at around 5 p.m. and cashed a $35 money order. The couple then went to Smith’s where they attempted to cash the $426 money order that wasn’t theirs. Smith’s staff immediately alerted the sheriff’s office.

Christina gave officers $33.60 she said she got from the $35 money order she cashed. The Smith’s store manager gave officers the $426 money order that had been reported stolen and that Christina Leon attempted to cash. The husband was present during all this and knew the money orders had been stolen, Christina Leon told investigators.
