Carson City is experiencing heavy bands of snow late this morning amounting to low visibility and icy road conditions. There have been multiple vehicle accidents and spinouts within the past two hours. Motorists are urged to keep travel around town to a minimal and stay off the roads.
The National Weather Service has adjusted their predictions for total snowfall to up to 8 inches in Carson City. The area is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 p.m. tonight.
Several inches have fallen already within the past hour and it doesn't look like it will let up anytime soon, said Deputy Emergency Manager Stacey Belt. City plows and sanders are out in full force.
Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said when the decision was made this morning to have school, there was light snow. After students got into the classrooms and settled is when the snow started to pick up.
"Now that the kids are here they are in a safe place. There are no plans for calling school off early or to do anything different," said Stokes. "If parents, at anytime, feel the need to pick up their kids early we will always honor their wishes."
School buses are equipped with chains and drivers who are prepared and trained to drive in all conditions. While there may be delays, the plan is to release the high school, middle schools and elementary schools at their regular times, said Stokes.
The weather services says expect to see snow accumulations through the day today and into the evening commute as well. As the sun comes up during the day, road conditions may improve briefly, but then after 3pm roads will become slick and icy once again as the sun sets.
Anyone heading to the landfill today should note that the city dump is closed due to poor road conditions. Travel disruptions are also happening in the Sierra where the heavy snow bands have also set up.
Check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.
