Carson City Public Works picks design firm for downtown Carson Street project
Carson City Public Works Director Darren Schulz announced Wednesday that after reviewing proposals and finalist presentations, a city review and selection committee has selected Lumos & Associates to lead the Downtown Carson Street Urban Design Project.
The committee will enter into contract negotiations for a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors will then approve, disapprove or modify the contract. The contract is anticipated to begin February 5, 2015.
“Lumos & Associates has a deep breadth of experience with similar streetscape projects and a proven track record of collaboration for successful outcomes,” said Schulz. “In addition, we believe their local office, team and knowledge will help successfully involve our community in achieving a project that will make Carson proud.”
Lumos & Associates is a regionally recognized, multidisciplinary consulting firm providing civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, planning, landscape architecture, traffic and transportation, water resources, surveying, GIS, materials testing and construction services to clients throughout Northern Nevada. Lumos & Associates has offices in Carson City, Reno, Fallon, and Tahoe, each with a full range of engineering and surveying services.
Lumos' Carson City, Reno, and Fallon offices have fully equipped materials testing laboratories. Lumos & Associates will engage HDR Engineering, Inc., Design Workshop, PK Electrical and Kelly Associates in the design process.
The Carson Street Design project is one of the capital improvement projects approved by the city and is estimated to cost approximately $10-11 million and funded from a 1/8th cent sales tax and Public Works funding.
Design for Curry Street improvements and a pedestrian plaza on Third Street will be included in the design contract, though construction of the Curry Street improvements will come two years after the Carson Street improvements.
After input from local residents, an initial conceptual design was developed that includes redefining the street corridor as an urban complete street with wider sidewalks, landscaping, urban street furniture and amenities, sidewalk cafes, urban art and more. After engaging the design firm, the project will move into a more detailed design phase that will involve further input and feedback from business owners in the area of improvements and the community at large before a final design is decided upon.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2016 and is estimated to be completed by the end of 2016.
