The Road to Bethlehem: Drive Through Living Nativity
Every year since 2001, the First United Methodist Church of Carson City has re-enacted the night of Christ’s birth as a Drive-Through, Living Nativity. Lit by 800 luminaria and occupying an entire city block, ten scenes are depicted as cars drive down The Road to Bethlehem.
Walkers also enjoy the story from a special walking path. Over the course of two nights, nearly 200 people of all ages are involved in telling the story, along with live donkeys, cows and sheep. More than 1000 people witness the Christmas story, some for the very first time.
Frequently, people leave with tears in their eyes, resolving to come back the next night with their neighbors and friends. It is a way to witness the night of Christ’s birth and feel the true message of Christmas. In our world of uncertainty, this message of hope and abiding love is a gift to the community. No fees are charged, though canned food is collected for those in need.
This year, the Living Nativity will be Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12-13. Cars will drive through from 6:30-8 p.m. The entrance is at Division and King Streets, west of Carson Street. For more information go to www.carson1umc.org or call the church at 882-1436.
