Carson City Parks hosts ranger-led programs in October

Every month, the Carson City Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, events, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

Online Registration is often required so Park Rangers have a proper head count. All programs are subject to cancellation due to Park Ranger availability; registered participants will be notified. You can find more information about each program at:

Coyote Walk

Back by popular demand! If you didn’t get to attend the last Coyote Walk, here’s another chance!

Join the Park Rangers (again!) for an educational walk all about the coyotes! While enjoying a walk along the Carson River from Silver Saddle Ranch, you will get to learn everything about coyotes from identification to their habits and culture. If you have been afraid of coyotes while hiking in this area, this is the walk for you.

Meet at the Silver Saddle Ranch parking lot and come prepared with layers, water, closed-toe shoes, and an excitement for our coyote friends! The hike will be roughly 2 miles over flat terrain with a trail rating of "easy". This hike will be fall during sunset hours, so also bring flashlights strong enough to catch the glow of coyote eyes.

Cemetery Tours
Hank Monk’s After Dark Cemetery Tour
Take a ride with Hank Monk on his famous Stagecoach around Lone Mountain Cemetery for a night of spooky historical fun! We will be joined by Janice Oberding, Author of Haunted Nevada: Ghosts and Strange Phenomena of the Silver State, who will share her haunted knowledge of the cemetery. Expect visits from P.H. Clayton, Hank Monk, Annie Martin, and more!

This tour will take place upon the Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch Mule Wagon on a 1/2 mile journey. Dress for the weather and remember close-toed shoes. Choose one of four 30 minute tours happening on Friday the 13th. Only 10 spots are available per tour due to wagon capacity. The wagon unloads about 1/2 mile from the starting location, so plan on taking a short, spooky, walk back.

A $10 donation is not required but strongly encouraged. The donations will be split between Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch and Lone Mountain Cemetery. You can pay the donation upon checkout or in cash at the activity.

Join a Carson City Park Ranger for a night of spooky historical fun at Lone Mountain Cemetery! Travel around the cemetery learning about the lives and deaths of Carson’s famous historical figures. Expect visits from P.H. Clayton, Hank Monk, Annie Martin, and more!

This tour will be about a one mile loop under the darkness, so prepare for some spooky happenings. Dress for the weather and remember close-toed shoes. Only 30 spots are available so register quickly before spots fill. A $10 donation is not required but strongly encouraged to Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Fall Colors Hike

The 6th annual Fall Colors hike is back for another beautiful year! Take a relaxing stroll through the cottonwood groves of the Carson River and learn why the leaves change colors, what our animal friends are doing in preparation for winter, as well as everything you wanted to know about the Carson River.

The trail is considered "easy" according to the IMBA and will be roughly three miles long. We will venture to the Mexican Dam and back via the Historic Mexican Ditch Trail!

Students at Carson High School will take an active role in democracy next week (Oct. 28 through Nov. 1) as they cast ballots and participate in mock elections ahead of the official general election Tuesday, Nov. 5. Carson City Sheriff’s Office K9s take 1st in Narcotics Detection and finish 2nd team overall at the 3rd Annual Regional K9 Unit Challenge.

On Oct. 19 nearly 40 K9 teams from 13 agencies competed in four events centered around the primary duties they perform in the field. Carson K9s controlled the narcotics detection portion, finishing 1st, 2nd, and 4th, while Washoe K9 took 1st and 2nd in apprehension, and Lyon K9 took 1st in agility.
