Letter: Last chance to speak to Planning Commission on Vintage project
The Planning Commission meeting on Thursday Sept. 29th, in the Community Center Auditorium at 5:00 p.m. is concerning the Vintage Project.
The meeting is a "Now or Never" opportunity for the public to express opinions about the project. The project has 5 phases. The first 3 are located in the vacant area from Mountain St. to Ormsby. They plan to develop a project for people 55 and older, that will provide 221 closely built houses and 97 connecting units without kitchens for people who need assisted living.
There is a great potential for housing 400 to 600 people who will arrive from California. They want to develop 5 acres in the center with a club house, a pool, a beauty shop, a restaurant, a small store and other unnamed business.
This is not only call for a zone change, it will only be open to people who live within the compound. The developer said it will be a "community within a community." This seems to be the opposite of the other work in downtown that
will offer more to the Carson City community.
Some of the objections of the local residents of Carson City are as follows:
A. Inadequate Medical resources, 34 primary doctors, 24 do not accept Medicare, 9 are cannot accept new patients until May and 1 can accept after December;
B. Emergency room usually has about a 4 hour or more wait.(many patients cannot find a primary doctor); C. A 6 foot vine covered fence surrounding project area on borderline of current residents back yards, plus
a chain link 10 feet closer to Senior residents (Blocks views, isolates residents);
D Some of the residents wander and get lost but there are no plans how these folks will be cared for;
E. There are only 2 gates (one on Mountain and one on Ormsby)large enough for Fire Trucks to enter;
F. Traffic on Mountain St. is dangerous now and has no ability to handle more traffic than it has now; G Sewage disposal resource are at maximum now with no plans for extension of facility. No capacity to provide for additional residents;
H. Would put a strain on water capacity. The surrounding homes are on water restriction at this time and have had a major increase in water and sewer bills recently. How can the limited water of Carson City provide for the large number of people, green areas and the vines and trees around their property? Carson City buys water from Minden at this time.
This project will split up the single unit homes of the area and in doing so will hurt the West side. This is the area of a 3 good schools. Known as the best area to raise children and have dogs. The people who live in this area look out for each other and are always there to help others.
This large isolated area in the middle of the West side will take away the ambiance and the safety of a great area. The West side is big part of Carson City that makes it a great place for families.
