Carson City District Attorney speaks about Constitution to Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter
Daughters of the American Revolution, Battle Born Chapter, and Fort Churchill Society, Children of the American Revolution, celebrated Constitution Week on September 15, 2019 with a gathering featuring guest speaker Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury, whose topic “Rascals and Rebels: Uprisings that Sparked America” described the struggles that changed history.
In 1955 The National Society DAR petitioned the Congress to set aside the week of Sept. 17-23 annually as Constitution Week. The purpose of the observance week is to promote study and education about the U.S. Constitution.
Jason, with his “Constitution Nerd” enthusiasm, walked us through the rebellions which disrupted the status quo and became the foundation of our Constitution.
The 1773 Boston Tea Party was initiated by those “rascals” the Sons of Liberty. These men, costumed as Mohawk Indians, stormed 3 ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor. Shays’ Rebellion shut down courthouses and escalated violence, and it contributed to the calling of the Constitutional Convention.
The 1794 Whiskey Rebellion afforded the new U.S. government its first opportunity to establish federal authority by military means. We learned how these rebels helped our country to become a viable republic.
This quote by Calvin Coolidge concluded the presentation: “To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race.”
After the presentation, the audience moved to the Charters of Freedom monumentlocated on the grounds of the Court House. How inspiring to see the documents which still govern us today!
