District Judge Luis to speak at Democratic luncheon
The speaker at the September 16th Democratic luncheon will be Kristin Luis, District Judge in Department Two of the First Judicial District of Nevada. The district covers Carson City and Storey County.
She was sworn in on January 9, 2024, following appointment by Gov. Joe Lombardo, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge James E. Wilson. The opposing candidate is Mark Krueger. The winner of this race will serve out the last two years of Judge Wilson's six-year term.
Born and raised in Reno, Kristin attended UNR on a diving scholarship, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Economics. She later earned her law degree from Gonzaga University School of Law, and has been practicing law since 1997.
Her career includes work in private practice, handling cases that involved criminal defense, prosecution, civil representation, and specialty courts. She clerked for Judge Mills Lane and served as Assistant District Attorney in Carson City, heading up the criminal division. There she prosecuted a number of high-profile cases involving charges of sexual assault and murder. She was appointed by Judges James T. Russell and James E. Wilson to serve as Juvenile Special Master, where she made important decisions in delinquency cases and cases where children had been removed from their parents due to child abuse or neglect.
Serving in the various roles within the judicial system, Luis has handled a wide range of cases, from minor traffic violations to serious felonies. In January 2019 she was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace in Carson City, where she handled misdemeanor criminal cases, bail hearings, preliminary hearings, and small claims civil actions. She also oversaw the Mental Health Court, that seeks to rehabilitate offenders with mental health issues through treatment and accountability.
Kristin Luis lives in Carson City with her husband and two daughters. She serves on the board of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada and the First Judicial District Bar Association. Upon announcing her candidacy in January, she said, “As a Judge, my goal is always to make sure the law is followed, and that all parties are treated with respect and fairness. It is important for the public to understand the role of this position and its impact on them. As a candidate, I am looking forward to meeting more members of my community, earning their trust and their votes by explaining my role and addressing questions or concerns they may have about the court system.”
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, September 16th, and can either be attended in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. The presentation will begin after all orders have been taken - around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
