School board candidate to speak at Democratic luncheon
The speaker at the August 12th Democratic luncheon will be John W. Henley, candidate for Carson City School Board of Trustees, District 7.
Since July of 2006 John Henley has been a law enforcement professional and certified public manager for the Nevada Department of Corrections. As a member of the school board, he wants to ensure that all students in the district receive a rigorous and well-rounded education that prepares them for success in life.
John is committed to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. He also advocates for the mental and emotional well-being of both students and faculty. He also intends to foster open communication and collaboration between the school district, families and the community to address concerns and make informed decisions.
John Henley supports innovative and sustainable teaching practices, technology integration and professional development opportunities for educators to continuously improve student outcomes. He believes in responsible budgeting and fiscal management to maximize resources that support student achievement.
He considers himself to be the best candidate due in part to his professional experience. He has been serving in the public sector, and has significant experience working with stakeholders to develop and administer policies that adapt to the needs of those stakeholders while conforming to the spirit and intent of the governing legislation. This experience will help the district develop policies that serve the needs of the district and its community members while operating within legislative mandates.
John's family moved to Carson City in the early 1990s. He attended school within the Carson City School District, graduating from Carson High in 2003. Three of his children have attended Carson City schools, two of whom are now attending university, and one who is still attending school within the district. His first-hand experience with district policies, both as a student himself and as a parent, has given him confidence in the district's continued success and insights into how it might do even better in the future.
John sees the school board as a team of members, each with unique perspectives and opinions. He believes that it's important for members to work together towards a cohesive vision of which way the district needs to go. He feels that his considerable history of working within teams toward common goals within in both his professional and personal life has prepared him to be a constructive team member. His experience has taught him to be open-minded and considerate of different viewpoints and concerns.
From John Henley's perspective, school board members make important decisions based on fact-based data, and that it's important to understand what types of data demonstrate the success or failure of a particular policy. That's why it's important to determine the most realistic ways of evaluating that data. Test scores may be a source of insight, but John doesn't believe they paint the full picture. He cites his work experience analyzing data points and making informed, fact-based decisions as an asset that prepares him for service on the school board.
This event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, August 12th, and can either be attended in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom.
