Sept. 11 observance happening Wednesday at Mills Park in Carson City
There will be a September 11 memorial observance at Mills Park on Wednesday. Public fellowship begins at 5 p.m. with refreshments. The program begins at 6 p.m.
Local observance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, will be at the memorial site at Mills Park, 1111 E William St, Carson City, located near the Marv Teixeira Pavilion. The memorial is hosted by Calvary Chapel in Carson City and Carson City Christian Ministerial Fellowship.
Each year attendees gather at the memorial site in Mills Park, which contains a piece of the steel beam donated to the city from the World Trade Center’s fallen North Tower.
Among representatives at the observance will be the Carson City Fire Department, Fire Chief Sean Slamon, Carson City Sheriff's Office, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell.
Elsewhere, the City of Fallon will host a ceremony, 10 a.m. at City Hall Courtyard, 55 West Williams Avenue, Fallon, honoring the first responders, military, and victims on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The ceremony will include a rendition of the national anthem from the Churchill County High School choir, participation in a national moment of silence, Olde Glory Flag Ceremony conducted by the Naval Air Station, a Three-Volley Salute by the American Legion, among other acts of acknowledgment. Remarks will be given by Mayor Ken Tedford and guest speaker Captain Andrew P. Mariner.
Originally dedicated in 2002, the City of Fallon’s 9/11 Memorial features a fragment of a steel beam from The World Trade Center. City of Fallon’s Annual 9/11 Remembrance is a solemn event that brings the community together with performances from a local choir and bagpiper group, participation in the national moment of silence, and a ceremonial placing of roses on the monument by council members, Mayor Tedford, and Captain Mariner.
The September 11 attacks killed 2,977 people, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in history.
