Reno Stop on ADHD Strike Out Stigma national tour hosted by Nevada Department of Education and Eye to Eye
Achieving their goals - to "strike out the stigma" of the LD / ADHD label and to empower those living with learning disabilities (LDs) and ADHD - is the focus of 5 college students, Eye to Eye mentors, who will make a special stop in Reno during a 12-day road trip: the Eye to Eye LD / ADHD STRIKE OUT STIGMA NATIONAL TOUR.
Reno is 1 of 9 key stops along the 3,150 miles the students will cover, before ending in Providence, R.I. The stop is significant because it builds on the recent success of Eye to Eye and the Think Different Diplomat program brought to the state by the Nevada Department of Education.

A complete Eye to Eye LD / ADHD STRIKE OUT STIGMA NATIONAL TOUR schedule is available at http://eyetoeyenational.org/programs/tour-schedule-2013.html.
The primary objectives of the national tour are to:
- Raise awareness about what it means to have an LD / ADHD.
- Empower those living with LDs / ADHD to take ownership of their labels.
- Share their story so as to "strike out stigma" by shedding a light on the misconceptions surrounding LDs / ADHD.
According to Jennifer Kane, Nevada Department of Education Programs Professional for Secondary Transition (http://doe.nv.gov/SE_ESE_SI.htm), "In 2008, the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) launched Nevada's Vision for Transition: A systematic approach to increasing graduation rates and improving postsecondary outcomes through a greater focus on college/postsecondary preparation. At the core of the effort lies the understanding that empowering youth with disabilities to become leaders in their lives is essential to future success in the world beyond high school.
The partnership with Eye to Eye began when national young adult mentors joined the Nevada Student Leadership Transition Summit (NSLTS) as presenters and expanded to include full participation in planning and facilitating the annual event. The NDE is excited to advance the collaboration with the Eye to Eye LD/ADHD Strike Out Stigma National Tour stop on July 19 in Reno which provides an opportunity for youth, parents, educators, and community members to discover tips on self-advocacy, self-esteem, metacognition, accommodations, and effective school transitions."
"Our volunteers are driven - literally, as inspiring and inspired individuals leading the Eye to Eye LD / ADHD STRIKE OUT STIGMA NATIONAL TOUR," stated Eye to Eye co-founder and Chief Empowerment Officer David Flink. "Their efforts have been remarkable - it is truly amazing to see the groundwork we've sown take root."
Eye to Eye is the only national LD / ADHD movement dedicated to mentoring. Eye to Eye does much more to reach many more people with the organization's message. In addition to establishing core mentor/mentee relationships, Eye to Eye brings people together both inside and outside the LD / ADHD community.
"With the support of Eye to Eye, the young tour members of the Strike Out Stigma National Tour are not just totally changing lives - they are totally changing the conversation about LD / ADHD," added Flink.
The Eye to Eye (http://www.eyetoeyenational.org) vision is simple yet bold: to create a world in which people with LD/ADHD are fully accepted, valued, and respected - not just by society, but also by themselves, that they live free from second thoughts or worry, and that they are ready, able and eager to apply their unique strengths to whatever they encounter in life.
Eye to Eye is determined to expand the safe space of its art rooms into society at large by normalizing LD/ADHD through open and honest conversation about it. The Strike Out Stigma National Tour is a physical embodiment of this movement.
