Fraternity men to make Carson City stop during cross country cycling journey
The Journey of Hope team will be arriving in Carson City on Friday June 16th for a visit with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and The Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities.
This overnight stop comes after a 35-mile ride from Lake Tahoe, Calif., the sixth day of a 3,720-mile cycling event across the country. The team will dedicate their summer to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities through grant funding and community engagement.
This group of 29 cyclists and seven crew members is one of three Journey of Hope teams starting at various places on the west coast. This event, organized by The Ability Experience, is now in its 30th year.
The team will arrive at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada at noon where they will have lunch and enjoy activities with the group.
Later that evening they will spend time with the Nevada Governors Council on Developmental Disabilities where they will get the chance to interact with several individuals with disabilities. Friendship Visits like this allow the cyclists and individuals supported by the local organization to spend time together playing games, dancing, and learning life lessons.
The Ability Experience has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club for over 13 years and with the Nevada’s Governor’s Council for four years; working with both to ensure that those with disabilities in the Carson City area feel connected and respected within their community.
The Journey of Hope team consists of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity men from across the country. The team will cycle an average of 75 miles per day ending at the National Capitol on August 12. Every cyclist commits to raising a minimum of $5,500 on behalf of people with disabilities in hopes to enhance their quality of life.
The mission of The Ability Experience is to use shared experiences to support people with disabilities and develop the men of Pi Kappa Phi into servant leaders. The Ability Experience organizes Journey of Hope and two other large service projects each summer, and is the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi. Founded in 1977, the Ability Experience is committed to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Combined with corporate sponsorships, the 2017 Journey of Hope will raise more than $650,000 for people with disabilities across the nation. The Ability Experience has raised over $15 million in its 40-year history.
