Carson City Elks donate money, chairs to local women's shelter
On May 20, 2021 the Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 presented Lisa Lee, Executive Director of Advocate to End Domestic Violence program with a $,1000 check to help them with their cause and the Elks bought $1,000 worth of chairs to help decorate the children’s rooms in their new facility.
Funds were procured from the Elks Community Investment Program grant. The Advocate to End Domestic Violence program, a not-for-profit organization formed in 1979, provides a crisis hotline and a 51 bed shelter for those in need for up to five months under certain circumstances.
They offer apartment-style living with each unit having a fully-furnished living room, kitchen and laundry. Families have their own bedroom which enables them to maintain their routines, family dynamics and privacy when possible. Units are accessible to the fully-fenced backyard, play equipment and outside toys.
Consumable items such as soaps, paper products, feminine hygiene items, etc., are provided and restocked as needed. Every effort has been made to provide a home-like environment, a place that is safe and comfortable with structure and support. For those who need additional time beyond the five months, 'Transitional Housing' may be an option and offers an additional 12 months of housing and support.
Once clients are settled, AEDV staff works to help to set short- and long-term goals toward becoming self-sufficient, breaking the cycle of abuse and moving to a home of their own. For those who turn to the agency for help, it is AEDV's goal to aid those with the support and resources they need to move forward and become empowered and able to effect change in their lives.
