Cat stuck in Carson City tree rescued
I am a resident of Carson City’s West side for almost three decades and Friday morning my brother in law made me aware of a cat stuck in a 40 foot tall tree. Immediately, I thought this animal will need to be helped and will not be able to come down on its own.
Through research I learned that indeed, cats are good climbers and can climb almost anything. Coming down a tall structure on their own, may be a different issue as their claws find good grip going up and little on their way down.
Since the cat isn’t mine, I made contact with my neighbor who said her cat was with her and so, I started making phone calls. First I called the Fire Department, which would not assist. The Humane Society did not have the resources to get an animal from such heights and they could only dispatch an Animal Control Officer to place a bowl of food below onto the ground.
With the help of my other next door neighbor the Animal Control Officer would have easily been able to provide a lead and access to the tree from his roof and then to safety. When calling some Tree Service businesses, they were at first hard to get a hold of, or out of town.
Any rescue attempts of the cat had obviously failed by this morning and the poor thing had now been stuck at the same spot for over 28 hours. Once more, I started calling the Fire Department, the Humane Society and several Tree Services. Finally, two of the Arborist I was able to reach have called back and said that they would check it out.
I somehow find it hard to believe that only a few people and professionals seem care about the animal’s demise. Isn’t it a bit cruel to leave the animal without shelter, food or water, up this high, in this kind of weather until Monday morning?
At 3:30PM all efforts came to fruition when John Patterson and Shawn Toben with Tom Henderson’s Healthy Trees Service came to the location. So did Robert Wilson and his crew from Dayton’s Wilson Tree Works and Roland Albertson from the Nevada Humane Society. The competitors briefly communicated who will take care of the task to get the cat out of the tree.
Ultimately, Sean Paul, Keith Toben with Healthy Trees came to the rescue. He brought his son and family (Austin, Joni, Paseley and Jeremy) for support. Roland with Animal Services took the cat into custody to have it medically checked out.
In case no owner should be found and the cat turns out to be a feral cat, Kimberly Gwaltney, a local resident, who has heard the cat’s cries through the night showed interest in a possible adoption.
All came to a happy end and the neighbors would like to take the opportunity to thank all involved with the rescue efforts, especially Tom Henderson and his crews Sean Toben and John Patterson from Healthy Trees.
