The Hot August Nights Foundation, the philanthropic branch of Hot August Nights, supports 80+ non-profits charities in the Reno-Sparks area. In addition to fundraising efforts held during the annual Hot August Nights event, the foundation holds an annual fundraiser dinner, Classics & Cocktails, taking place Sept. 18 at the Atlantis Casino Resort & Spa. The foundation raises funds for youth that are considered in need or at-risk in northern Nevada.

Virginia City, Nevada may seem like a long way from the storied Civil War battlegrounds of the South, but on Labor Day weekend Civil War cannons will be booming again on the Comstock.

An open house will be held at Pioneer Nevada to benefit the Lyon County Animal Shelter, which will include free refreshments, music, a silent auction, door prizes and more, to celebrate the new office.

Monday's Democratic luncheon will feature a town hall by Carson City Sheriff Sheriff Kenneth T. Furlong. As always he is prepared to field questions on any and all topics on the minds of Carsonites, from whether black lives matter to whether Nevadans should defund the police. Kenny is the 26th sheriff to serve Carson City and Ormsby County since 1861 (not counting Sheriff Chon Wang, played by Jackie Chan in Shanghai Knights).
