On Friday, the Nevada Department of Transportation fully opened State Route 208 in Lyon County to 24-hour traffic as crews wrap up removal of a major landslide.

Earlier this month I wrote about planting cool season crops. In a normal year digging and preparing garden soil now would be appropriate. However, this year has been excessively wet with snow melt and rain and soil is still too soggy to work. Why is digging a saturated soil a bad idea?

Carson City Parks and Recreation and Sierra Nevada Cornhole hosted its inaugural St. Patrick's Day Cornhole Tournament for youth scholarships Saturday at the MAC Building in Carson City. There were 33 teams competing in two divisions, social and advanced.

Early estimates is that the event raised nearly $2,000 for youth scholarships.

Grapplers from both Carson Middle School (CMS) and Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) qualified for the league’s Tah Neva Championship Tournament set for March 25 at Pershing County High School in Lovelock, Nev. Coaches said the wrestlers became eligible during the qualifier tournament in Fallon, Nev. last Saturday.

Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU) held its 74th annual meeting virtually on Tuesday, March 14, to announce the results of its Board of Directors election, give voice to members and recognize those who have held membership at the credit union for 35 years.

At the meeting, Chairman Rob Joiner and Director Marsha Burgess were reappointed to the GNCU Board of Directors and each will serve in their respective positions for another three-year term.

Carson City Supervisors voted Thursday to approve the Mills Park Master Plan proposed draft, which included many additions and rehabilitations of the park including new pickle ball courts, a dog park, splash pad, and the most debated addition: a road connecting east and west sides of the park through the arboretum.

Development of Carson City has long been a topic of debate within the capital city, and recently, the discussions have returned more and more to the development of open space, and the confusingly named 17.10 Open Space Development code.

Youth Legislator Stella Thornton, 18-year-old senior at Carson High School, on behalf of the Nevada Youth Legislature, took time Wednesday afternoon to present and champion Senate Bill 80 (SB80) to the Nevada Senate Committee on Education. She was introduced by Patrick Donn Dimasin, chair of the Nevada Youth Legislature, and supported by Nicholas Murray, Ph.D., with the Neuromechanics Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno throughout the hearing.

A report of a student with a firearm Wednesday at Silver Stage Middle School in Silver Springs resulted in a lockdown of the school and two others. However, an investigation into the matter determined there wasn't a gun and that the threat to the school was false, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

Brewery Arts Center will present a one night engagement with The Glenn Miller Orchestra on Saturday, March 25t at the Carson City Community Center.

It is not advisable to off-road until trail conditions improve, says 775 Offroad and Recovery, a volunteer Northern Nevada organization that removes struck and stranded vehicles from public lands.

The group noted that especially now with the rain and added snow melt that off-road trails have become saturated with mud.

Many parks and trails have incurred minor damage, and efforts are being made to mitigate damage where possible. With the next storm approaching, several areas throughout Carson City will remain temporarily closed and be reassessed prior to reopening.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its preliminary report regarding the fatal Stagecoach Care Flight crash that took the lives of all five passengers.

The flight left Reno-Tahoe Airport bound for Salt Lake City, Utah on Feb. 24 at around 9 p.m., operated by Guardian Flight and doing business as Care Flight, and crashed only approximately 15 minutes after take off.

Just before 4 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Mills Park on report of a couple allegedly having sex on a park bench.

Upon arrival, deputies observed a woman, later identified as Jacqueline Stegeman, 33, and a man, later identified as Jeremy Bailey (age not listed), on a park bench. Bailey was performing oral sex on Stegeman and neither party heard deputies approach.
