New local resources for California companies exploring expansion or relocation to Nevada are now available in the San Francisco Bay Area and Orange County, the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) announced today.

GOED has retained James Renzas and John Schuetz, principals in The RSH Group business consulting firm, to provide information and initial assistance to California companies interested in Nevada opportunities. Renzas is based in Mountain View, Calif., and Schuetz in Irvine, Calif.

Soroptimist of Carson City and Platinum+ Salon & Spa once again are hosting the Backpack Attack Program to provide backpacks & school supplies to Children in Need. The program works to provide comfort through backpacks, school supplies and hygiene items to as many children as possible.

On Tuesday July 23rd Carson City Little League Senior All Stars (15/16 year old) did something that has not been done Since the early 1990's. They won a State Title by defeating Mountain Ridge Little league from Las Vegas in the Championship game at Governors Fields. With this win, they now have the ability to send 12 players and 3 coaches to the Little League Western Regional Tournament in Ontario California.

Steve Neighbors sat down for an extended interview with me this week about the Carson City Center aka Nugget Project. Neighbors, president of the Carson Nugget and trustee of the Mae Adams Trust and the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation, talks about the project that is set to be voted on by Carson City residents this November.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Aug. 25 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. Tim Renner will teach an intermediate/advanced lesson in nightclub two-step at 7 p.m., with the social dance at 8-10:30 p.m. Partners are not required. Lesson $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers.

The Sierra Place presents an open gallery and lecture on “Storied Landscapes: Prehistoric Rock Art of Nevada” on July 30, at 2:30 P.M.
Rock art is one of Nevada’s most significant pieces of its history. Pictures of these creations that were achieved by ancient hunter foragers will be displayed with many styles, themes, and cultural rock art of Nevada. This event is free and opened to the public.

Silver State Charter Schools will celebrate the relocation of the campus on Friday, July 27 at noon.
Dedication and ribbon cutting will be a part of this event, including an open house, tours and refreshments until 3 P.M.

The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company invites auditions for the timeless and irresistible classic, Hello, Dolly!, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in room 207 of the Aspen Building at the WNC Carson City campus.

The production will play weekends at the Carson City Community Center, Nov. 3-18. Matchmaker extraordinaire Dolly Levi decides to fast talk her way into a match of her own in this ebullient and irresistible story of the joy of living.

A Face in the Crowd, a film debuting Andy Griffith in his first major role, will be presented at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1st, at the Carson City Library.

The film will be hosted by former state archivist Guy Rocha and Reno News and Review editor Dennis Myers. The movie was directed and produced in 1957 by Elia Kazan, and written by Budd Schulberg. This film, which launched Griffith into stardom in the lead role as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, also stars actors Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Walter Matthau, and Lee Remick.

Carson City’s Cycle Pub will take part in Saturday’s I-580 Freeway opening. The vehicle will be sponsored by Carson City Commercial Real Estate Agent Brad Bonkowski.

Bonkowski wants to call attention to the freeway opening, saying it is good news for Carson City. The faster commute time between Carson City and the I-80 manufacturing corridor will help the area attract small manufacturing and industrial businesses.

Warm weather and cool fishing is expected this week along the many lakes, rivers and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. Here is this week's fishing report for the week of July 25. As always, pack plenty of sunscreen, abide regulations and have your fishing license with you.

RENO – Presumptive GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney went on the attack against President Obama today in a speech to attendees of the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention here, criticizing him for national security leaks, weak foreign policy and a failure to seize on political opportunities in such countries as Iran.

Romney, speaking to the same group that Obama addressed on Monday, spent his 27-minute talk focusing on his foreign policy views and the need to maintain a strong military presence.

The weather was hot, and so was the racing action at Fernley 95A Speedway last Saturday night. The Hobby Stock division led off, with Tom Haxall of Verdi taking the lead from pole and building a margin over Sun Valley’s Rick Miller and Jake Baker of Reno. Carl Barlow of Silver Springs, who won from the back of the field two weeks ago, wasted no time charging through the field to second place. Newcomer Haxall didn’t realize that the track rules call for racing back to the yellow, so when the first caution came out for two cars spinning in turn two, he lost the lead to Barlow.

CARSON CITY – Nevada today affirmed the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s automatic drought disaster declaration, which applies to all 17 Nevada counties.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will be conducting a DUI saturation patrol in central Carson City throughout Wednesday. These patrols are expected to be conducted in the future on evenings when dispatch receives a high number of alcohol-related calls.

The Sheriff's Office urges those who have consumed alcoholic beverages to use a designated driver or call a taxi.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies have arrested the following individuals based on gross misdemeanor or felony allegations:

  • An unidentified man (John Doe) was arrested at 2 a.m. Saturday morning near the Blue Bull for gross misdemeanor allegations of battery on an officer and misdemeanor allegations of obstruction. Another man was arrested at the same time for obstruction. Bail is set at $3,000 plus administrative fees.

Angela Hamlett and Bill Thompson married on the steps of the Carson City Courthouse, Saturday July 21, 2012 at 11:30 am. The happy couple met September 2, 2002 in Richmond Virginia. They moved to Bill’s hometown Carson City Nevada back in November 2005. Bill and Angela were engaged for five years before tying the knot Saturday. Overnight rain helped reduce the spread of the Springs Fire in Douglas County to only 30 acres, according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

The fire consumed 1,000 acres yesterday, but no structures were lost. The fire is officially only 5 percent contained, but they have reduced staffing to one engine and two hand crews.

Many women in rural Nevada have never had a mammogram. Fear, lack of funds, transportation conflicts, or no insurance are just some of the reasons women have not protected themselves against breast cancer. Yet, we know that early detection of breast cancer saves lives.

Not really, but it is nice to get some mid-summer rain. I'm sure the firefighters working on the Springs Fire east of Gardnerville are happy for the showers. Take a glimpse at a photograph that evolves into multiple masterpieces at the Nevada Artists Association’s Seventh Annual Landscape Show at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery, from July 31 – September 7 in Carson City.

Participating artists paint from the same photograph provided from the show using their own style and mediums, and even creating their own version of the photograph. The gallery will display the different styles that the artists have used for their creation.

The Brewery Arts Center board will hold its annual Membership Business Meeting on Tuesday, July 24, at 5:30 P.M.
The meeting is open to the public and attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts and inputs of how the BAC can better serve the needs of the Carson City community. There will also be an opportunity to meet the board and staff of the BAC.
The meeting will be located at the Brewery Art Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449. W. King Street.

Become a “Carson City Idol” by performing at the Drop-In Karaoke Night – Idol Style, that will be broadcasting live on television and the internet!

The friendly, non-Simon Cowell, Idol-Style Judges will be observing each participant's performance. Participants are welcome to bring their own karaoke track, choose from a provided song list, or even a self-written song.

Kids and teens have the opportunity to show off their inner stardom by attending film making classes at Carson City’s Brewery Art Center.

Students who sign up can choose from film classes such as screen writing, directing, acting, and editing and posting production. These classes range from $20 - $120, and each class will be in session between the dates of July 25 – August 16.

UPDATE 6:55PM: Afternoon thunderstorms produced lightning that started brush fires in the Pine Nuts east of Gardnerville in Douglas County on Sunday, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. No immediate structures were said to be threatened. The fires have burned about 1,000 acres at last report, which was 6:30 p.m.

Fire approximately 8-miles southeast of the end of Johnson Lane in Minden.
