A Face in the Crowd starring Andy Griffith
A Face in the Crowd, a film debuting Andy Griffith in his first major role, will be presented at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1st, at the Carson City Library.
The film will be hosted by former state archivist Guy Rocha and Reno News and Review editor Dennis Myers. The movie was directed and produced in 1957 by Elia Kazan, and written by Budd Schulberg. This film, which launched Griffith into stardom in the lead role as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, also stars actors Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Walter Matthau, and Lee Remick.
“A Tribute to the Man and his Legacy” was scheduled after the recent passing of Andy Griffith, who is better known as the affable Sherriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry. In planning this special presentation, Rocha commented about Griffith as being “a versatile actor of many dimensions, his first feature film role in 1957 resulted in a production that still resonates for audiences today. Witness a remarkable performance about the seduction of power in this dark satire of American mass media.”
In 2008 A Face in the Crowd was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” This presentation is free and will be held in the library auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.; seating is limited.
“Your Knowledge and Discovery Place”, Carson City Library, open Monday ,Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., is located at the corner of Roop and Washington Streets.
