Happy New Year! From the 50th Reunion Carson High Class of 1971.

We all have class reunions, and my 50th was this year. When you are younger, it is more of a competition rally of who is who and what you have accomplished. For some this can leave a bad taste, and many may not return to their next one.

Damaging winds blew down trees, caused power outages and closed the main artery between Carson City and Reno overnight, after the first winter storm of 2022 moved into the region, further causing headaches for motorists, long wait lines on alternative roadways and the loss of electricity due to downed or damaged power lines.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nevada State Police are reporting potentially dangerous road conditions in Washoe Valley, including blowing snow and ice. Additionally, two overturned semi-trucks are blocking some lanes in both directions with high winds hampering efforts to remove the trucks.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office made 14 arrests over the New Year’s Weekend, December 31, 2021 through January 2, 2022. Additionally, the Sherriff reported the County experienced another year with fewer calls for service as compared to previous years.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting the first case of Omicron Variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 in the Quad-County Region of Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County, and Storey County.

Beginning this Wednesday, Nevada Health Centers is offering a weekly walk-in COVID-19, influenza immunization clinic at its school-based health center, located at 618 W. Musser St. in Carson City. The immunization clinics will run from 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday until otherwise noted.

Nevada Day announces as of January 1, 2022, Brooke Santina will take over as the Executive Director for the non-profit. The former director, Ken Hamilton, informed the Nevada Day Board in December he would not be returning after holding the position for over a decade. The Board thanks Ken for his many years of service to Nevada Day and wishes him the best in his new endeavors.

UPDATE 6:31PM: I-580 from Bowers Mansion to Eastlake will be closed in both directions beginning at 7 p.m., Monday night, according to the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Division. NDOT will assess road conditions at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. Winds are expected to be in excess of 60 mph this evening.

Alternative routes to and from Reno include taking US-50 past Dayton to Silver Springs and taking USA Parkway to I-80. If heading to Carson, reverse the route taking I-80 to USA Parkway and then US-50 to Silver Springs and Dayton. Taking Eastlake around the east side of Washoe Lake may also be possible. Drive slowly.

Visitors are reminded that the annual seasonal closure of native surface roads, also known as dirt roads, went into effect Saturday, January 1, 2022 on the Eldorado National Fores. These roads will remain closed until at least April 1.
