LAS VEGAS — The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has granted $437,000 to Carson Valley Medical Center to purchase a general ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound and emergency bedside ultrasound system as part of a $4.2 million initiative to help rural, frontier and urban hospitals and health centers across Nevada provide better ultrasound imaging services. Funds will also support robust training opportunities to increase the number of sonographers in Nevada and provide continuing education.

RENO — Already this year, more than 25,000 wildfires in the U.S. have burned over 1.3 million acres, equating to 2,000-plus square miles. This month, 20 homes in Southern California’s coastal town of Laguna Niguel burned to the ground, and prompted hasty evacuations by residents of 900 homes.

RENO — Water often falls from the sky and is stored in mountains across the U.S. as snow before it melts and flows down to urban and rural communities. Knowing what factors influence when and how much of that snowmelt ultimately makes it to streams, rivers and reservoirs is crucial for water managers trying to make the most of limited water resources.

A warming trend will return to the Carson City region this week with dry conditions early on and north to northeast breezes each afternoon. By Wednesday, highs could reach 90 degrees for lower elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

UPDATE 1:37PM: According to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini, the fire was knocked down and contained at around 1.5 acres. Firefighters are doing "mop-up" or cleanup of the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A 33-year-old transient man was booked for felony possession of Fentanyl after he allegedly attempted to smuggle the substance into the Carson City Jail while he was being transported on a warrant.

This summer adults 50+ are invited to a series of four writing sessions with Nevada Poet Laureate Gailmarie Pahmeier!
