Let me start with a disclaimer. I am not against libraries. I have an entire room dedicated to my books. But I have not used a library since I was in graduate school, because everything I needed for work was on-line or in a bookstore, too new to have made it into a library, public or private.

Western Nevada College's Latino Student Club is seeking performers for a fund-raising event on Friday, Nov. 9, that brings students and the community together for an evening of cultural entertainment. One of Nevada’s most significant historic treasures is now the nation’s newest historic landmark with action today from the United States Department of the Interior. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar listed the McKeen Motor Car at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City as a National Historic Landmark.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Wednesday announced the designation of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad McKeen Motor Car #70 based in Carson City as one of 27 national historic landmarks.
Calling the McKeen Motor Car #70, Virginia & Truckee Railway Motor Car #22, "the best surviving example of the first commercially viable application of internal combustion power in a self-propelled railroad car" the designation possess exceptional value and quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States, Salazar said.

Carson City’s rich and intriguing history is explored and theatrically relived in the 20th annual Ghost Walk – Legends of the Past. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian Era and diverse past. A Carson City man faces felony drug charges after authorities received a search warrant and found heroin and methamphetamine. Edward Dale Cheney, 23, was arrested Oct. 15 and faces the drug charges as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of a suspended sentence.

This information is in response to several recent letters to the editor that have proposed the consolidation of libraries in Carson City. Our goal is to provide our community a better understanding of the types of libraries in Carson City. It is true there are libraries who serve the public in Carson City, but Carson City Library is the only “public library.” The other libraries are not “public libraries” and here is how they differ:

A unique arrangement between Carson City Library and Smith’s Food and Drug Center has opened a pathway between the library and local supermarket — literally. For many years staff and volunteers parked directly behind the back of the library. Alternative parking was considered when parking in the back lot was no longer an option.

The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission announced Wednesday some minor adjustments to JAC Routes 2A and 2B, including the extension of service to the Parkway Professional Center on Goni Road and the new Nevada Health Centers location on Research Way.

“Our customers alerted us to the need to access medical and social service facilities in this area and we responded with this route adjustment,” said Ken Smithson, Transit Coordinator in a news release. “This allows customers to ride safely to and from their destinations in this area.”

This year’s 5k Race/Walk will be held on November 10th, 2012 at 10AM and will be held at the Carson High School track facility. The Carson High Safe Grad program has been an annual tradition in Carson City for over 20 years. It provides our graduating seniors with a safe and sober, all night celebration on the eve of their graduation, followed by a trip to the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom amusement park in northern California.

We would like to recognize our U10 boys soccer team "Blue Vipers" who went undefeated during regular fall season & play off tournament giving other teams a chance to win entry into this weekends "Cookies Best" soccer tournament. Michael Rohr & Josh Hall dedicated their time to coach these boys, and thru this dedication led them to this weekends tournament to face other regions for a spot in the Section 2 Tournament.

It is time that Carson City gets behind their college’s athletic programs. Western Nevada College has had athletics since 2005. They have had rodeo, women’s soccer, women’s softball, and perhaps the cornerstone of the entire athletics, the men’s baseball. All of these teams have amped up the enrollment of Western Nevada College and yet, the athletics continue to struggle financially because of the lack of local support.

A Carson City woman was arrested and faces a gross misdemeanor charge of battery on a police officer in an Oct. 14 incident in the 600 block of Roop Street.

AAA Nevada will present $20,250 to the Nevada Division of State Parks to improve directional signs throughout Lahontan State Recreation Area. The public is invited to attend the check presentation ceremony that will take place Tuesday, October 23, at 1:30 p.m. at 901 S. Stewart Street in Carson City.

AAA Nevada teamed up to help Nevada State Parks help fund projects that would otherwise go unfunded. Throughout their “Summer Road Trip” campaign July 1 through August 30, AAA Nevada donated $5 to Nevada State Parks for every AAA insurance quote completed within each AAA branch office.

A series of car burglaries on the northwest side of Carson City has resulted in two arrests with more expected.
Suspects allegedly targeted at least eight to nine unlocked cars during the weekend, starting on Friday night, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

The largest Great Nevada Shakeout in its three-year history, and part of the world’s largest public earthquake drill with 18 million participants globally, is Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. More than a half a million Nevadans are registered to participate in the annual statewide public earthquake drill, and with just a few days to go the Nevada Seismological Laboratory would like 100,000 more people registered.

Jeremy James Morales, the inmate who escaped from the Storey County Jail on Oct. 1 was found Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Morales was found near Mound House outside the Storey County line, said Sheriff Gerald Antinoro. He was dehydrated and had injuries to his feet. He was taken into custody and booked back into the Storey County Jail. He escaped by locking a deputy inside his cell when the deputy was doing bed checks.
He was and is being held on charges of sexual assault involving a minor. Morales was returned to the jail and faces additional charges.

Every political season brings out the candidate yard signs and every season, it seems, where Carson City residents are asked to vote, the ugly side of politics rears its head with vandalism. State spending would bump up slightly to deal with more people seeking government assistance and state employees would still see their pay cuts and furloughs under agency budgets released this morning.
Total state general fund spending would increase 2.3 percent next fiscal year over the current year’s spending and then stay virtually flat the following year.

A Carson City man faces a gross misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor domestic battery charge after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and threatening her family. According to the arrest report the mother of the woman who was beaten called authorities saying that her daughter had been assaulted.

Three people have applied for an opening on the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission. The Board of Supervisors will move to make an appointment for the four-year position when they meet Thursday.
Applicants for the seat have been submitted by Joan Colburn, Lee-Ann Keever and Jennifer Veneziano.

The streets of downtown Reno were packed earlier this month for the 31st Annual Eldorado Great Italian Festival Locals and tourists, Italians and those that wanted to be Italian for the weekend, all came out to celebrate the sights, sounds and smells of Italy. Carson City authorities detained a man who reportedly pulled a knife on a Walmart employee and stole food items.
Walmart security reported the robbery 3:50 p.m. on Sunday. Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies chased the man who ran on foot to the Carson City line and Carson City deputies tracked him to an area near Bodines Casino. He was detained by Carson City deputies at 4:06 p.m. and placed under arrest by Douglas County authorities.

The San Francisco Giants had the option of bringing back Melky Cabrera who led their team and Major League Baseball in batting average with a .346. Yet, the Giants continue to stand their ground by saying “Cabrera’s status regarding the postseason remains unchanged.” That’s according to the Giants VP of Baseball Operations Bobby Evans. The Giants’ General Manager Brian Sabean also chimed in on the matter by saying: "In our minds, it's not the right thing to do," and "They're too good, as a group."
