It’s become somewhat of a cliché, saying in a retrospective astonishment that something began as an idea. In theory, everything begins as an idea. But I’ve never been a part of something from the very beginning that would eventually lead to a fully realized organization like the Nevada Media Alliance, so you’ll have to forgive the cliché.

Knowing how to comfort and support a loved one who has a terminal illness can be challenging. How can you help your loved one cope? How will you deal with your own grief?

A seminar for terminally ill individuals and their loved ones will be on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 3-4 p.m., at Sierra Nevada Cancer Center, 1460 S. Curry Street in Carson City.

UPDATE 9:50AM: The Carson City Communications Dispatch Center reports the widespread phone outage that began Monday night hasn't affected 911 calls coming in. So far no one has complained to dispatchers that they had a difficult time reaching 911 through to dispatch, said Marlon Moncada, communications supervisor for Carson City.

AT&T has been sending updates to the dispatch center, the Sheriff's Office and the Carson City Fire Department about the problems and have worked to resolve immediate issues that involve 911 emergency service first, Moncada said.

"What we have been told is there is a group that is working with 911 centers so the community is able to call 911 and not experience problems," he said.

Meanwhile, messages to Carson Now have come from several readers stating their cell phone, internet and DSL services remain out of service with AT&T, Virgin, Sprint, Boost Mobile.

The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau on Monday nominated former Carson City manager Linda Ritter as interim executive director.

Board members meeting unanimously approved Ritter after she had expressed interest in the position. Ritter was nominated by Karen Abowd, board member of the CCCVB and a Carson City Supervisor. Ritter was not at the meeting and hasn't accepted the offer.

Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks was arrested early Sunday morning in Las Vegas on suspicion of domestic violence after allegedly attacking a family member in a physical confrontation and then attempting to take a law enforcement officer's gun.

The arrest, reported at 12:30 a.m. came only days after Brooks, 40, agreed to a leave of absence while being investigated for a number of bizarre events that began with his arrest for allegedly making threats to Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

On Wednesday, Feb. 13, and Thursday, Feb. 14, the outside westbound lane on College Parkway will be closed east of the intersection with Lompa Lane near the Fire Station due to utility work. Any delays will be minimal.

UPDATE: Duncan, the 8-month-old abused puppy brought to Carson Tahoe SPCA after its owner was incarcerated, has died. According to a SPCA Facebook post Sunday morning, Duncan had a set back and was taken to Animal Emergency Center in Reno.

UPDATE 10:17AM: The Reno Gazette-Journal reports a 78-year-old driver died in a single-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 580 near College Parkway in Carson City. NHP tells the RGJ the driver was likely driving north in the southbound lanes when they struck a concrete bridge abutment.

The name of the victim who died Friday morning in a pedestrian hit and run incident has been identified as John Boggs of Carson City, Sheriff Ken Furlong said.

Boggs, 46, was married and had a son in high school. Boggs, who went by "Randy" was the owner of Randy Boggs Construction and was a general contractor, his wife told Carson Now.

His wife, who didn't want to be identified at this time, said the family is hoping the person who hit and killed her husband will turn himself into authorities.

The pilot found dead in the wreckage of the downed airplane found in the Pinenut Mountain Range in Douglas County Thursday has been positively identified as Keith Jorgenson, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Jorgenson, 46, was reported as the lone pilot of the plane when it left the Minden Airport on Wednesday evening.
