HCC seeks AmeriCorps members to teach financial literacy

AmeriCorps is a national program that connects individuals and organizations to help communities tackle challenges. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is currently recruiting for part time and full time AmeriCorps members to serve up to 12-month terms teaching financial literacy to children, teens and adults.

As the holiday season quickly approaches and families plan to gather, it’s possible that some will start to see changes in their aging loved ones. Perhaps it’s been some time since they last saw a senior relative — time spent together during the holidays may reveal some decline in health and cognition that could be a natural part of aging, or perhaps it’s something more concerning.

As a young mother hoping to create positive and lasting holiday memories for my daughter, I would book us for breakfast with Santa that usually took place in a large department store when we lived in Washington D.C and San Diego.

One year ago, Nevada’s own dinosaur, Nevadadromeus, received its official name and description, entering the specimen into the annals of paleontology. In recognition of this incredible discovery, the Nevada State Museum and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City will be hosting special events this week commemorating the first anniversary of Nevadadromeus, the first official dinosaur discovered in the Silver State.

On Thursday, Carson City Supervisors voted to approve a new pilot program at the Carson City Jail called the Family Services Unit, which will be created to support inmates with children and at-risk children.

The program is preventative, which means that it is not offered to anyone currently facing charges for child-related crimes such as abuse or neglect.

A 37-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly throwing rocks at a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy, according to a sheriff's office booking report.
