When the lake we love for its scenic splendor showed up in a photo on the front page of the New York Times with the caption "The lake that Mark Twain once called ‘the fairest picture the whole Earth affords,’ looks and smells like the bottom of an ashtray,” well, that was enough to sink my heart to the very bottom of Lake Tahoe.

The Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, which has served northern Nevada as a non-profit since 1980, has donated a vehicle to Carson Tahoe Health for its behavioral health outreach programs. The vehicle will be used to assist CTH professionals and increase access to care through programs such as Assertive Community Treatment, First Episode Psychosis), school suicide risk assessments and community education around mental health awareness and suicide.

A car and foot chase resulting in a crash occurred just before 7 p.m. near a car dealership on South Carson and Curry Street on Saturday evening.

Approximately 10,000 people remain evacuated from their homes in the Caldor Fire zone. Some were allowed back in the West Zone on Friday, but Christmas Valley and North Upper Truckee residents in the East Zone remain evacuated along with many other western areas.

There is no timeline for any of those still evacuated, but fire officials said they hope to give residents good news in a few days.

This morning, the annual Sept. 11 memorial was held at Mills Park, to remember those who were lost twenty years ago in the World Trade Center terrorist attack.

As of 12 p.m. on September 11, 2021, all Douglas County precautionary evacuation warnings have been lifted.

A 58-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for DUI first after allegedly attempting to drive away from a local restaurant after “tumbling” to her vehicle.

Firefighters battling the Dixie Fire near Susanville continue to make progress with containment, which was 59 percent Thursday morning and mapped at 927,320 acres, according to Cal Fire. Conditions on the ground are expected to change due to an incoming weather system that is forecast to bring gusty winds and thunderstorms over the fire area.

With the potential for thunderstorms, gusty winds and low humidity throughout the Sierra and at Lake Tahoe, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for Thursday through Friday night.

The Caldor Fire has moved to 53 percent contained. The 15th largest fire in California history is now 217,946 acres, according to a Thursday morning Cal Fire briefing. To the north, the Dixie Fire at 922,507 acres is the 2nd largest in the state's history (top single fire as the 2020 August Complex was a group of fires). That fire is 59 percent contained.
