Matthew Russell Blevins, 41, of Carson City, was arrested Monday afternoon for allegedly hitting a road worker with his truck.

According to the arrest report, the incident took place near the intersection of East Long and Russell Way. The flagger reported that Blevins, driving a 1996 white Ford truck, disregarded his directions to drive on the east side of the street. He said that Blevins then stopped, made hand gestures at him, then drove straight at him, striking his right leg with the vehicle. The victim said Blevins then left the scene northbound on Russell Way.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from individuals who may be interested in serving on the Carson City Cultural Commission in the following categories:

Tahoe's original ski resort, Granlibakken, near Tahoe City, is lodging central in 2012 with various ski and stay packages for seven area resorts.

“How much more warm weather and sunshine can we take,” laughed Kay Williams, deadpanning over last season’s epic seven-month winter and 700+ inches of snow. “Sure, various ski resorts like to be the first to open or last to close, but we want folks to know that we’re ready with early-season offerings.”

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the 23rd Annual Ski and Snowboard Swap at Mont Bleu Casino and Resort at South Shore Lake Tahoe Nov. 18-19. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides skiing and snowboarding programs and events for regional youth and local middle school and high school students.

Carson City firefighters responded this afternoon to a wildland fire in an empty field near the 3000 block of South Carson Street south of Mill House. Initial attack of the fire at different flanks has the fire reportedly knocked down, but fire units continue to arrive and are staging at the Mill House parking lot. Windy conditions caused the fire to spread to about an acre in size. Mop up is happening now but firefighers on the scene are reporting that, because of the wind, the burn area needs a good dousing to stop stray embers from spreading. The area is dense with brush and tall grass.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad is one of a handful of officially licensed Polar Express Train Ride events nationwide this holiday season, Nov. 25 - Dec. 18.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is proposing to thin trees and brush on National Forest System lands near Incline, Nev., to reduce wildfire risk and restore forest health. The LTBMU is seeking public input on the Incline Fuels Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration project by November 28.

The project area includes 3,927 acres of National Forest System lands on the northeast shore of Lake Tahoe, from the California-Nevada state line to Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park.

A 62-year-old man died of an apparent heart attack Monday afternoon after he was detained for shoplifting at the Safeway store on North Carson Street.

The subject was detained by store security for alleged shoplifting and Carson City Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene. While in the store manager's office, the subject turned pale and began having difficulty breathing, at which time paramedics were called.

A 43-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight after being hit in a crosswalk on Monday afternoon in Gardnerville, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
An accident investigation indicates the woman was walking in a crosswalk to an entrance to an O’Reilly vehicle parts store at 2:37 p.m. on Highway 395 north of Kingslane, said Trooper Dan Lopez.

Another change in the skies over Carson City, Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra is in the forecast this week, according to the National Weather Service.
After a Nevada Day weekend of blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures in the valleys and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the region, with possible periods of heavy snow for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the weather service.

For the first time in more than a century, bighorn sheep are back in the Virginia Mountain Range of Northern Nevada.

On Sunday, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and volunteers from conservation groups, released eight desert bighorn sheep into Virginia Mountains south and east of Reno. It%u2019s the first step in an effort to re-establish a population of Nevada%u2019s state animal there for the first time since the 1880s.
