Man dies of apparent heart attack after being detained for shoplifting (updated)
A 62-year-old man died of an apparent heart attack Monday afternoon after he was detained for shoplifting at the Safeway store on North Carson Street.
The subject was detained by store security for alleged shoplifting and Carson City Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene. While in the store manager's office, the subject turned pale and began having difficulty breathing, at which time paramedics were called.
A few minutes later, the subject became unresponsive and went into cardiac arrest. He was given CPR by deputies at the scene until the paramedics arrived. He was transported to Carson Tahoe Hospital where he was declared dead.
The subject was reportedly in possession of "a large amount" of methamphetamine when he was detained. It is not known yet if he was under the influence of the drug when he died.
The name of the subject has not been released.
