Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Feb. 24 through March 1, 2020. The official groundbreaking for the South Carson Complete Streets Project is Saturday, 10 a.m., at the former armory site located at 2361 South Carson Street. Go here for information about the project and here for information on future lane restrictions and street closures related to the project. Closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

STATELINE — There was an exciting end to last Presidents’ Day Weekend for Dorothy Boone of Temple, Texas as she hit the Three Card Poker progressive jackpot at Harveys Lake Tahoe on Monday night, Feb. 17, resulting in a win of $1,340,518.

The Carson City School District is needing local community members to attend, weigh in and provide opinions at the quarterly Community PLC meeting, also known as Professional Learning Community, this Wednesday, February 26, 6 p.m., inside the Carson High School Library.

CARSON CITY — Initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled just over 10,500 in January, down 860 claims, or 7.6 percent compared to last January. Compared to December of 2019, initial claims fell by 12.3 percent, or 1,480 fewer claims, according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Crowds at the Carson City caucuses were decidedly smaller this year thanks to the new early voting caucusing allowed by recent legislation.

Carson City's own Ryker the Spinone Italiano won his Breed at the Westminster Dog Show earlier this week. There were a total of 13 Spinoni entered to compete this year and Ryker brought home the gold with best in his breed.

This isn't Ryker's first big win at Westminster though, as he is a return champion.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Thursday afternoon to a brush fire reported near the 3200 block of Arrowhead Drive and Hytech Drive in northeast Carson City. The fire was quickly extinguished and no structures appear to have been damaged.

Jerry Eugene Kilpatrick passed away at home surrounded by his family. He was born August 17, 1940. He died on February 12, 2020.

Retired Carson City teacher and longtime animal welfare advocate Lisa Schuette has announced her candidacy for Carson City Supervisor Ward 4. She is running for the seat currently held by John Barrette who is not seeking another term.

Clint Koble, a Democratic primary candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, will be the featured speaker at the next Democratic luncheon. Koble was also the CD2 Democratic candidate in 2018.

The Virginia City Silent Riders are a group of volunteers who represent the western frontier which was often a dangerous and lawless place. When justice needed to be served, there wasn't always a Sheriff and Judge. Instead, there were honorable and righteous men and women who stepped in to deliver swift justice. These groups were known as 'vigilance committees', and they existed across the west.
