Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Wednesday, August 12, 2020 that there are 20 new cases and 10 recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 836, with 669 recoveries, and 15 deaths, 152 cases remain active.

LAKE TAHOE — A new control tool for aquatic invasive plants that clog waterways, reduce water clarity and provide cover for other invasive species at Lake Tahoe continues to show impressive results in its third year of testing. The tool is a light array mounted under a working barge, which trolls through the marina dousing the plants on the lake bottom with ultraviolet-C light.

Nevada DMV will offer extended hours on weekdays but close Saturdays at its Reno and Las Vegas offices, officials announced Wednesday. This summer, wilderness rangers report bears are successfully taking down food-hangs in Desolation Wilderness. Once bears become habituated to human food and garbage they will return and seek it out. Agencies highly recommend using bear resistant canisters when visiting the backcountry.

Douglas County issued an update and correction to their previous release, which stated that no reports had been filed regarding alleged assaults that occurred during the protest.

In response to the current severe risk of wildfire, the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest elevated the current fire restrictions on August 7. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating incidents of vandalism that have occurred at the Carson City Republican Party headquarters. The latest incident was Monday, August 10 and involved spray paint tagging and an American flag that was intentionally cut nearly in half.

Gusty winds, low humidity and the threat of thunderstorms have prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a Fire Weather Watch for Carson City, Carson Valley and much of the Northern Sierra Front beginning Tuesday afternoon and extending into Wednesday evening.

MINDEN — The planned Black Lives Matter protest and counter protest began at the Douglas County Judicial and Law Enforcement Center located at 1038 Buckeye Road in Minden at 9 a.m. The Sheriff’s Office estimates the combined size of the groups was between 750 and 1,000 protestors.

At midnight Saturday the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest entered Stage 2 Fire Restrictions in response to the current severe risk of wildfire. Nevada is experiencing record dry conditions with much of the state in a severe drought.
