Carson City Sheriff deputies arrested Terry David Vickers, 45, Thursday evening after a woman reported that he had beat and strangled her into unconsciousness, and assaulted her with a screwdriver.

According to the arrest report, the victim told deputies that Vickers began the assault Wednesday night when he slapped her at a restaurant on North Carson Street. She said after leaving the restaurant she made contact with some friends and left with them, not returning to the motel room she shared with Vickers until Thursday morning.

I haven't been doing hiking of late because of a back problem, but with my new electronic "tickle belt" I'm able to hit the hills again.

I recently returned to my old favorite Dead Man's Creek on Eastlake Boulevard about 5 miles from downtown Carson. It was 90-plus that day so I turned back burned out before reaching the gazebo that perches at the end of the trail, but I did discover a new sign at the trailhead, courtesy of Nevada Division of State Parks. It's one of the best trail signs I've seen in recent times.

Dear Editor,

Is it the policy of the Nevada Appeal to print demonstrably false attacks on the editorial page? I'm referring to the letter to the editor on June 25 that claims, "There is incontrovertible proof that an ineligible usurper sits in the White House."

Michael Thomas, president of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society, will speak this Saturday at the Jack C. Davis Observatory of Western Nevada College on "Galileo the Astronomer."

The program begins at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7:30 so visitors can look over the facility. After the discussion of Galileo guests can enjoy star watching through the Society's many fine telescopes and visit the main viewing room with the major telescopes used by astronomers.

The programs at the observatory are free and take place most Saturdays year round.

At the Carson City Fandango Galaxy cineplex, I was a bit confused watching the new movie. Once I got the idea of the plot --- guy, girl agree to sex with no emotional strings attached, I thought I had been caught in a time warp. I'd seen this movie, only it was titled "No Strings Attached" and starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

"Captain America," subtitled "the First Avenger," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is the fourth in the series of related comic book heroes brought to the screen.

And while it does live up to its pulp ancestry with lots of action and fantasy, it reportedly is a 124-minute promotional effort for a film to come, "The Avengers," all four heroes joining to save the world or do other good deeds.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman Wednesday evening for her third DUI offense since 2008.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed a blue Toyota Prius driven by Monette Martin, 52, drive through the road closed barricade at the corner of Saliman and Robinson streets. After stopping her, the deputy reported that he smell alcohol and gave the suspect a field sobriety test, which she wasn't able to complete satisfactorily. A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol level of .127.

With our summer temperatures currently in the 90-100 degree range around Carson City, it is unbearably hot for this poor, sweltering soul.
I am a winter person, not a summer person, and do not like hot weather!
Thank goodness for those of us who live in this part of the United States, we can temporarily escape that miserable summer heat by finding coolness at the higher elevations of our nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Last Wednesday morning (July 20), Elaine and I did just that.
