carson now: brush fire photo

Fire crews are finishing up work on a small brush fire that broke out on the east side of Carson City, south of Highway 50 East.

A Nevada Division of Forestry helicopter was seen dropping several loads of water on the area after personnel from Carson City Fire Department and the Bureau of Land Management contained the fire on the ground. There were no structures visible near the fire.

When it first started, a big column of smoke was visible throughout the city, and reports at the time said it is more than one acre and spreading toward Rifle Range Road.

If you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun.

I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.

I am miserable and grouchy during these hot weather months.

I hate the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees. So, when it gets hot, I either hide in the tree shade in our backyard, stay indoors where it is delightfully air conditioned or go high in the Great Outdoors to avoid the miserable heat, especially in the month of August.

Note to people intent on carrying methamphetamine: Speeding in a Corvette through downtown Carson City probably isn't a good idea.

Two people found that out early this morning when a Carson City Sheriff's deputy stopped them near the intersection of Carson and Washington streets for going 41 mph in a 25 mph zone.

A key aspect of the recent virulent debate over the debt ceiling had to do with the question of raising tax rates, at least on the super-wealthy, in exchange for deep cuts in government spending. Before we can evaluate the pros and cons of that “grand compromise,” let's look at current tax rates and understand who pays what income taxes.

"The Change-Up," an R-rated film now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City and elsewhere, plays concurrently with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" at the Galaxy.

"Apes" is probably the best summer fare this year. No way "Change-Up" is going to be on anyone's "best" list, unless it's that of the sophomore class at Carson High. But even young teens, at whom this movie is aimed, surely will know better. It's a lousy take on contemporary American men and society. Director Dave Dobkin makes the trains run on time but with such a lousy load of freight.

CARSON CITY – A federal agency that sought comment on rules that would have applied commercial motor vehicle regulations to farm vehicles on public roadways has decided not to go forward with any changes, bringing a sigh of relief to Nevada farmers and ranchers.
The U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement that it has determined “that most states have already adopted common sense enforcement practices that allow farmers to safely move equipment to and from their fields.”

Gamblers had a hot time in June on the Las Vegas Strip, pushing the gaming win for that area up 32 percent over prior year, and helping the state's overall gaming numbers to a 16 percent increase.

But times were not so hot in South Lake Tahoe, as cool weather chased away gamblers and helped cause the win in that area to drop 28.55 percent. North Lake Tahoe also dropped 14 percent.

The Carson Valley area, which encompasses Carson City, fell 5.8 percent.

Besides the Las Vegas Strip, Elko, Laughlin and the Boulder Strip also posted big increases for June.

Monday night's presentation of the new plan for the Carson City Center development to the Nugget Advisory Committee has put this much-criticized project back on track, even winning over some long-time opponents.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Supreme Court could soon open the doors of Nevada courtrooms wider than ever by allowing witnesses and others to appear at both civil and criminal trials through audio-visual links rather than in person.
