Thomas Deal has been named Food and Beverage Director of the Carson Nugget.

Deal has worked 22 years in Restaurant Management and Food Preparation and has worked in restaurants including Cantina Los Tres Homebres, BJ’s Restaurants and TGI Fridays.

Deal is a 14 year resident of Nevada. He is married to Julia Deal and has a 12-year-old son.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested David Lee Potts, 30, a Carson City man, at 4 p.m. Thursday. Potts was arrested for felony allegations of grand larceny of an electric wrench (worth $1,200). Bail is set at $25,000.

Officers also made the following arrests for misdemeanor allegations:

  • A 45-year-old man for obstructing and delaying a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and reckless driving.
  • A 22-year-old Carson City man for violation of a suspended sentence.

CARSON CITY – It probably comes as no surprise to many Nevada motorists that the state is ranked in the Top 10 as one of the most dangerous in which to drive.

Nevada rounded out the top 10 states for dangerous driving with 1.56 fatalities for every 100 million miles driven, according to the report by carinsurancecomparison.com.

The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors yesterday approved wording for ballot question seeking a sales tax increase to fund the Carson City Center Project, aka Nugget Project.

Supervisors agreed to two important changes to the original wording released last week.

For the second time in history, mountain bike enthusiasts are welcome to join their peers on a great "Mountain Bike Nevada" adventure and ride through Nevada, border to border, from Sept. 8-18, 2012. "We're looking for riders who want to experience an epic ride across some of state's most spectacular terrain," said Todd Whear, ride organizer and event co-founder. The journey is touted as "once in a life-time experience" and is a fund-raising event for the Nevada Public Education Foundation.

Sierra Front Interagency Fire Dispatch Center is asking citizens to stay out of the area where the Preacher Mine Fire recently burned in Douglas County.
Curious citizens and off-road vehicle operators have been utilizing the roadways and backcountry area where the fire burned, and this has caused problems for the fire mop-up crews still operating in the area.
Some smoldering hot spots still remain in the area, and hand crews will be operating in the area for several more days extinguishing them.

On Friday, June 8, 2012, Heavenly Mountain Resort will begin operating the Heavenly Gondola seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for sightseeing, hiking and dining. The Tamarack Express Chairlift will also operate, accessing miles of hiking trails with the best views of Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY – The House Natural Resources Committee today passed, with bipartisan support, H.R. 4039, the Yerington Land Conveyance and Sustainable Development Act, which was introduced by Congressman Mark Amodei, R-Nev.

  • Sean Tyler Van Doren, 26, a Carson City resident, just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Van Doren was arrested for gross misdemeanor allegations of child abuse/endangerment, as well as misdemeanor allegations of driving on a revoked driver's license, reckless driving, and violation of a temporary protective order. Bail is set at $6,500 plus administrative assessments.

My wife this morning heard some strange sound outside that sounded like air escaping. I went outside to see what it was, expecting it to be the street sweeper or something.

Then I saw someone standing in the the street looking up in the air toward our house. I turned around, and couldn't see anything because of the tree in our front yard. I could hear voices talking above me, and for a second I thought our new neighbors were doing something on their roof.

CARSON CITY – Two Democrats seeking to succeed Steven Horsford in the 4th Senate district in Clark County disagreed today in a televised debate on a business margin tax sought by teachers to fund public education.

A new bus service at Lake Tahoe that will run from Incline Village to Sand Harbor Beach State Recreation Area will begin this month.
A collaboration of the Tahoe Transportation District, the Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Highway Patrol and Washoe County School District will inaugurate the East Shore Express, a pilot Park and Ride bus service beginning June 15 and will run to Sept. 3, 2012.

Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens are seeking information on a deer that was shot and left to suffer and ultimately die near Pioche in the early morning hours of May 31.

The Operation Game Thief Citizens’ Board is offering a $500 reward on information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

UPDATE: On Wednesday morning at approximately 6:45 am, parolee absconder Randy Nourse turned himself over to deputies at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Minden Station.
Nourse was previously reported as a fugitive from justice by the State of California, Department of Parole and Probation.
Nourse was safely taken into custody by Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies without incident.
Nourse will remain in the Douglas County Jail pending his extradition back to California.

Western Nevada College pitcher Dylan Baker made history for his Wildcats team Tuesday while his own dream of becoming a professional baseball player came true. The Cleveland Indians selected Baker in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft, making him the highest-ever selection out of WNC.

CARSON CITY – A proposal seeking to implement a business profits tax in Nevada to support public education will be filed with the Secretary of State’s office on Wednesday.

Supported by the state teachers union and the AFL-CIO, if the groups can collect 72,352 signatures by November 13, the issue of taxes will be dumped squarely in the laps of state lawmakers in 2013.

CARSON CITY – Five candidates, including one current board member, are seeking the State Board of Education seat in District 3 in Clark County in the June 12 primary.

The top two vote-getters in the nonpartisan race will move on to the general election in November. The board, reconstituted in the 2011 legislative session, has four elected seats. Another three will be appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and legislative leadership.

The City Center 'advisory' vote being floated by our city's elected officials assumes one very important fact: the Supervisors don't revoke or materially modify the ordinance they might adopt in June or July some time before the November election.

CARSON CITY – Washoe County Republican and Democratic Party leaders may disagree on who the best choice is for president, but they agree on one point – Washoe is the “battleground” county in the battleground state that is Nevada.

Clark County is expected to go big for Democrats and President Obama, while Nevada’s rural counties are expected to go strong for Mitt Romney. But Washoe County, where Republicans lead in voter registration by 3,700, has gone for both parties in past elections.

Since posting the City Center aka Nugget Project ballot question on Friday, I've had several calls about why the question is advisory.

After all, according to Nevada Revised Statutes 377A.030, the Carson City Board of Supervisors must seek a majority vote of the people to implement the quarter cent sales tax to fund the project. So why is it advisory?

A single gunshot was fired inside a South Lake Tahoe bar early Sunday morning that missed patrons after an argument between two men, authorities said.
The incident happened at around 1:40 a.m. at Whiskey Dick's, 2660 Lake Tahoe Blvd. A local man was arrested in the incident. There were no injuries as a result of the gunfire. Minor injuries were reported that resulted from a fight.
